You need elixirs to do this. You can buy them from stall network or get them from killing monsters.
Weapon elixir = Upgrade weapons
Shield elixir = Upgrade shield
Protector elixir = Upgrade armour
Accessory elixir = Upgrade accessories (ring, necklace, earring etc.)
Tip: When adding +2, +3 or +4 use lucky powder to increase the chance of success.

I was not aware you could upgrade pickup pets such as the Kit T (kitty)
