Merchant: Why a red flag?

What exactly are the advantages to having a red merchant flag over the white one. It seems that it is mostly for show/appearance?
Anything I am missing here?

It basically says you're a full time merchant... or have too much money.

Either that or it shows you HAD money. I've known plenty of people that will save up money just to buy a red flag or a black devil suit, and have almost no money in the end.
