Scammers are getting smarter?

Post by IC3 »

I recently read a post about scammers getting trikier and thought i would share my experience of a poetential scammer. I had one trying just before i left poseidon, but i didnt get hacked as im over protective of any info. heres a short demo of how the convo was running.

The person greeted me to the guild and than starterd asking questions like, where do i live, what i study, ect. More talk he went on to say he was studying law in egypt and going to move to england one day , he than said his name "Mohamed" and i know he is the biggest hacker on the server as 2 people i know got hacked by this guy so my guard went extra up. He than starterd saying i hope we will be good friends on this server ect, he than asked me do i have hotmail. Straight away my answer was no, he than said do i have facebook. my answer again was no. of course i do have these i was just being carefull. i presume he wanted my email and than he would than research me in hope to find my secret answer.

What happened shortly after?

He sold his char apparently his for $110 and said he was leaving. strange how from a moment he said he wanted us to be good friends and that i could ask him for anything, any time. Might i add as soon as i said that i didnt have these things and i added i dont buy silk he stopped talking to me.

Perhaps im being over protective, or this is just a very smart scammer, i dont know...

comments will be apprieceated :D

They are getting smarter -
The other day I created a new character on Neptune...got him to level 24 and some person offer me a level 24 SOS dagger, I asked her how much she wanted for it she said 500k...I told her I only had 400k and she said "500k or no deal" I said "No deal"(terrible game show) and she said okay....she walked away for 3 minutes and said "Okay, 400k". As I went to go trade as soon as we were about to press accept, she canceled the trade...I said to myself "WTF" she said "Come on, man" assuming that she thought I closed the trade window so we started another trade and this happened 3 or 4 times finally I told "Stop closing it, retard!" the final time she obviously knew I was mad...I was so mad I wasn't paying attention...she put the dagger in and I pressed confirm and she pressed confirm and right before I pressed accept, I noticed she switched out the SOS for a NPC 24 dagger, I canceled it and called her out as a scammer.

They're using social engineering to try and screw us over, gotta love the ingenuity of the concepts they're coming up with.

thats actually an old trick i believe from another game but i cant think of it >.<

it wasnt for a item it was for a game setting, we would start the game and than as the count down starterd to start they would cancel quickly change a setting and restart countdown, alot of peopel did it.

if they trying to scam an account i wouldn't call that smart maybe a step up from the 'free silk' approach, smart would be pulling it someone that doesn't come to sro to make friends. too many questions make too much suspicions. the real smart scammer is more like the fly on the wall

Theres all types of scams.. and alot of different ways o.O im not sure how you could get scammed by giveing out your email but im pretty sure nobody should give out any private info on a game o.O. anyways.. theres also a new scam in the scamming business... P lvl sound familiar? powerlevelers who assumeing power level you for xxx amount of money for xxx amount of hours could easily scam you, as you always have to pay them first. many people have been scammed by powerleveler's due to desperation of leveling or just plain lazy :P anyways, i hope that everybody does the smart thing by keeping your guard up and keep your scammed % at a minium.

if hes a hacker then hes asking for your facebook/email/location to find out your IP adress so he can brute force you or send you a keylogger. as for your location and face book hes probobly trying to find information such as your name or birthdate or hometown/highschool to find out possible answers to your secret question that he could use to change your pass.

(This is the most elaborate/ingenious scam I've witnessed.)

First off, the guy was multiclienting. Now that thats out of the way, he has char 1 in a stall, with a bunch of crap, and then a SOx weapon (which is probably... priced double its value, I think it was like a SOM 24 blade or something priced at 30mil.)

(Keep in mind, I wasn't aware of the scam at this point.) He then has char 2, where, on that char, he has a SOM 52 glaive which he wants to trade for a SOM 24 blade.

Of course, naturally, I look in the stall network for another SOM 24 blade, and only find the way overpriced one. So I try to bargain with him, I offer him (in gold) 60mil, DOUBLE what he could have bought the SOM blade for, he said sure, so I showed him the stall with the SOM blade for 30mil.

The exact second he entered the stall, the stall closed, and the stall char absolutely REFUSED to sell to him, and telling him to go away.. Then, the second he left, the stall would open back up. After about probably an hour of this... negotiating/going-into-stall thing (and having the stall close every time when he entered), I caught on.

I was really considering buying that friggin overpriced blade... that glaive was worth probably 200mil or more (at the time). And of course, if I did buy it, he wouldn't trade for the SOM glaive, unless I was horribly mistaken.

Zneaky was there also, and I explained the situation, and s/he came to the same conclusion. :P

sometimes the scammers are not even smart enough to be dumb

here is my scammer story

back in the day i didnt have a wolf yet, but was working toward it

one day a guy said i have a wolf and need gold real bad

he wanted i thinks around 800k

i told him i didnt have that much gold

he hesitated, and asked how much i had

i said i had aabout 470k only way to little for a wolf

he said ok, and left

about 2 or 3 minutes later he said he would take what i had for wolf, he needed gold bad

and since i was greedy and wanted wolf bad, i said ok

he offered exchange, and put in about 6 or 7 items and a wolf

and wouldnt you know it i was having DC problems, and i DC'd

I quickly log back on and he comes back and i appologize for dc, he says hurry before you dc again

Again exchange is offered, he puts in items and wolf again

and worried about dc and being greedy, i put in my gold and click confirm before he is done and am clicking on accept as he puts in wolf and then takes out wolf

Deal goes through with no wolf, he begins to run away, with me calling to him for my money back
then he quickly logs off,

i was so mad, i sent him messages calling him noob asking for my gold back

after awhile i calmed down and began to think how would i get my money back, so went to look at what i got in the trade to see what i could sell and for how much

when i looked at the items there was a som glove for my char that i was able to use

I used that glove till i out grew it, then sold it for about 800k i think

LOL, this story is true, it happened to me

8) 8)
