I need help dealing with a scammer on TROY

Post by tritefox »

Hello. My son plays this game, I do not, so I need an knowledgeable person's help in trying to resolve a situation. My son was scammed by a person on the Troy server out of what he tells me is a lot of gold. I do not know if scamming is legal or not in Silk Road.

Would someone who knows the politics of Troy, and also is very familiar with the game rules and the reputations of people, as well as the mechanics of the game and has experience with high-end equipment please send your instant chat details to me via private message or something?

I'd really like to ask some questions and show some screen shots of the scammer doing his scam and give some information so my son and I, with your help, can figure out what to do.

Thank you so much.

Ok, great so far. You've kind of answered the question of "is scamming legal?" with a "yes", sort of. You said it is illegal but the SR company cant help get items back. Does that mean the SR company will ban scammers, but not give scammed goods back? Or does it mean it is actually legal, just "looked down upon" only. (AKA, it is perfectly legal and there is no chance of GM intervention)

If so, that is fine. It does not mean, however, there there is absolutely nothing I can do. I'll need to get in contact with someone who knows of the politics of TROY server, then show him who the scammer is ETC and see if his guild or whatever you call them in SR approves of scamming, and see what other avenues we might take to convince the fellow to give the gold back.

Any expert want to get in contact with me privately so we can go over the specifics?

Actually it is not illegal to scam. JM feels they put measures into the game that would prevent any reasonable person from getting scammed, which is true. The two part trade system is ample protection for a moderately aware player.

Frankly, I also find a parent's involvement on this level (the "politics of Troy"???) to be slightly disturbing.

Your son didn't think and was scammed...
Instead of acting e-tough for him and trying to "go after"
the guy, why not teach your son how to act smart and not get his
ass scammed.

personally, i don't think it's disturbing at all, and more parents should at least TRY to help out their kids. if your kid got ripped off by some punk on the street, wouldn't you want to do something about it? just because they doesn't know much about the game doesn't mean they don't care. it's the parents that say, "so what, it's just a game" that bother me.

unfortunately, there's really nothing that can be done. you can post screenshots of the scammer if you wish, or just give the in-game name. some Troy players may decide to take justice into their own hands, but most scammers have a second 'scammer' character anyway. that way nobody knows who it really is, and they won't be bothered in-game on their main character.

and no, there's no real political system at all. there are guilds, but those are loosely defined groups, not rigid systems(for most, some are strict).

sorry that there's not much to do, but JoyMax definitely won't do anything about it, and there's not much anyone else could do.

oh, and for those few of you that have been here for over 6 months and remember me, you can take this as my welcome back post, since i started playing again to check out the euro stuff.

I see that there is no way the SR company will help in this matter. That was expected. I no longer am asking if or if not they can help. I see that if anything is to be done, it will be on a player to player level. I am fine with that.

That being said, instead of judging a situation which you do not know the full details of, please either contact me at abirdnamed@gmail.com using Gtalk chat, or refrain from making baseless accusations and judging my son's intellect and my parenting skills.

Thank you.

PS: I beleive it was over 1 billion gold that was lost. That sounds like a lot to me, but I do not know since I am not a SR player. Perhaps whoever helps can end up with a portion of that?

Personally, I think there is no recourse. Getting scammed is a hard lesson to learn. The only thing to do is be more careful and not get scammed again.

I will be the judge of that, once I have mixed my knowledge with that of an expert SR player.

The screenshots show the guy seems to be a member of a guild and is wearing impressive looking golden armor. For all I know, he is some very famous player with a reputation to maintain. At any rate, I can think of dozens of ways to possibly make him give up the goods. If you want to help, please trust that I can turn this situation around even if you think I cannot.

I have enough information now that I can confidently say "Either volunteer to be my knowledge source in this matter or do not waste mine and your time posting."

Thank you.

IGN or your son and the person who scammed him (IGN)

TBH seems like you word your arguments well. But there is nothing that can be done. Only thing you can do is watch out for each other...and dont buy SoSun. Even the closest friends will scam. IE...Benkyou scammed SQUATCHY's sun sword and shield after awhile of playing with each other. Tuan was going to buy Sun Glavie for 1.4B...with 400M gold first..and 1B for the final trade... _bvd_ never opened stall for 1B to trade off the sun glavie...scammed Tuan for 400M.

If you want to be the E-Punisher...then maybe the best thing is to let this be the lesson to your son. Because nothing will come out of your crusade to punish those who scammed him

1 bill aint hard to make if you really want it just take some time, but it's possible. There is a guild in Alps that stall all day and buy sun and resell them again and again and again , their char lvl like snails but they have full sun+7 gear and weapon for each degree -_-

Just help if you can, theres no need to be too cynical about this. If information is all they need then it wont cost you anything but some time spent. Unfortunately, I've never logged into troy, nor am I an expert at all concerning this.

well only way to get it back would be by let people on the server know about it and him feeling guilty or getting pressure from his guild to give it back, but we dont know the guy so no one know if it would work.

Thanks to those who are trying to give their opinion and view on this, but in all honesty I do not need it. I simply need someone who is involved with the community of Troy and knowledgeable in this game to contact me so I can continue this in my own way.

Thanks in advance to whoever is able and willing to help out.

Then I will flat out tell you what you are missing here. lol SRO is a free game and it's a dog eat dog social system. Someone you have played with for a year can steal your account and everything on it, sell the char on Ebay and then join some guild who is happy to have a player with such nice items cause maybe one of THEM can scam a few off him. That is the general reality of the game. It isnt everyone, but it's close. THe chances of you being able to do anything at all about this are 0. They are asking for the name cause a little pressure can go a long way, but that is pretty easily ignored; I know cause my guild has been coated with the drops of dead botters for years and they havent been silent about it, yet here we still are.

I am not being cynical, I am being realistic and you cant get much more knowledgeable or involved in SRO's community than I am.

Then contact me using an e-mail address that you do not use for anything important. Or just use the PM feature in this board. I simply don't want to discuss all of the details in a public setting. I'm still waiting for a friendly someone to help out.

Thank you.

I am not looking for e-mail specifically. I'm looking for live chat. Usually having an e-mail account = having a live chat service

Yahoo = Yahoo Instant messenger
Hotmail = MSN Instant Messenger
Gmail = Gtalk

etc.

PM system is OK, but it is not real time. The "chat" button at the top of this page leads to a 404 error.

I see this game community seems to be composed mostly of scammers and honorless cowards, therefore trust is low. I understand your caution. However, worst case scenario let's say I am some sort of scammer who is looking to trick you into giving something away. Just don't accept any weird files from me or give me any important e-mail addresses. Don't offer to trade anything with me in-game, don't give me your account information or anything like that for any reason. Don't give me any of your RL contact information either.

As long as you do not make a mistake, I can't do anything to you, so relax. I am only looking for advice from a veteran player of the Troy server. Nothing more.

This is how the guy looked, minus his head of course.

Also, he had what appeared to be a guild name/title.
What do you make of that? High end gear? Items require a high level character to be able to equip?

Maybe if you volunteered a little more info about the situation up front someone would be more willing to help.

But as it stands now, this is how I see it. 1 Bill is a significant amount in SRO, to anyone and there are 2 ways to get it, earn it or buy it. If your son earned it, that means he's been playing for a very long time and is well aware of the "politics" of SRO. In which case he would know by now to be very careful trading with others. If your son bought it, then he himself is not "legit" in the eyes of the SRO community, and nobody will want to help, he will just need to buy more. Either way, you have not provided enough info to help your situation any. Don't be afraid to post the name. SRO is a community, and the only way to get your gold back it to go after the scammer as a community. In all honesty tho, the chances of you seeing that gold again is very slim.
