Hi, ssjkakarot here, i left SRO about 3 months ago, but unlike others, i thought that there were 2 many "im leaving sro posts" around so i decided to go slowly. Anyways, i rescently was doing some research on the PS3, and i found out that it can run Yellowdog and Ubuntu Linux. Since PS3 can run Linux, and i heard from some other ppl that they can run SRO on linux, is it possible for ppl 2 play sro on ps3 with a mouse and keyboard?

nah, i gave up on sro a loong time ago, and i cant find ubuntu or yellowdog anywhere, so i cant test it. The ps3 rite now is on hold, until Assassins creed comes out (theres double pack in canada; assassins creed and COD4 for $80) and then its gametime. And after skool lets out for winter, Im good to go.

So som1 with ubuntu or yellowdog, tell me if it works or not!

There was discussion a loooooooong time ago about running sro on a psp also. You would have to find combinations for every hotkey.

It wouldnt work. The linux verison you run on it can't use the ps3 graphics correctly to play the game. People were getting all hyped up when they thought u could play any Windows based game on it. Unless they figured out how to do it by now. Doubt it.

if your question is ...... " Can silkroad run on Ubuntu?".......... then the answer is yes on the 32 bit version ..... but as far as running ubuntu on PS3 with Ubuntu .... i am sure you can but there would obviously be some complications as far as running it off of the PS3

*** EDIT ***
best thing you can do is go to their forums and ask there

thx for the link, for now, i really dont want 2 load linux 2 my ps3 without my dad here (hes software engineer who works with lunux all the time so he should b an asset) and this is purely hypothetical. I do not want 2 return 2 sro. Still, if such a driver for the graphics could b made, would it b possible?

Don't think ps3 got dedicated video card that supports any version of dx emulation.

My treo650 can run linux but doesn't mean it can run sro lol.

If there would be a way don't you think jm would have already done it
ps3 silkroad even more money for jm :P

I got ps3 myself and Linux is not able to reach and use the full power of the PS3's GFX so no it is not possible to play pc games on your ps3. However, there was some news not a long time ago that something is getting developed wich would make this possible.

hey i'm sorry for not replying for a couple of days ... well for while but here are links to put ubuntu on ps3

and i would not see why you couldn't just run sro off of ubuntu 7.10 with wine emulator ( which can be added from the repositories ) ..... since i run sro from my ubuntu

but i dont have a ps3 to test so .... probly asking on the 1st thread would help

Sadly, I really don't think it would work. Ubuntu would have to have video drivers that are compatible with the PS3's graphics adapter. I'm sure they do not have those drivers. Perhaps they are being developed?

If Ubuntu did have the correct drivers installed, then wine could communicate with them and SRO could communicate through wine to display its graphics properly. You could most likely install SRO, but running it would be a problem. It would likely fail when it tries to switch to full screen mode, unless the SRO installer checks for appropriate drivers and fails before installation.

u can put any linux on the ps3 really, but you need the right disc format O_O lol, cuz ps3 is like picky on what cd it takes, and you have to run in a iso

I've ran SRO on kUbuntu with the wine emulator but it was quite the hassel and not really worth the time except for the challenge of figuring out how to get it running. As for running SRO on a console... why the hell would you even want to? SRO isn't much of a console game and the whole concept of targetting mobs with an analog stick be a bitch. [Anybody ever play starcraft on the N64? That's what happens when you port games MADE for the pc to a console. Shooters port failry well, but games where a mouse is definitely in order don't belong on consoles.]

Anyways, back to playing FF12.

I had SRO running pretty good in Ubuntu without much hassle. Then Joymax did a patch and it stopped... they did the most current patch, and it works again apparently.

Some consoles support the use of a mouse and keyboard. I think someone stated the PS3 does. The Sega Dreamcast does, and it can run homebrew games and Linux without a mod chip. Not sure what mod might be required for PS3.

I do agree though that SRO would be horrible on a game controller.

I'm the application maintainer for Silkroad Online at the Wine Appdb, and yes, Silkroad does run on Linux, although I'm not sure about the PS3 since you generally need to install 3rd party drivers for accelerated graphics. You will have to install the Wine compatibility layer to let you run Windows applications on Linux, then you can install Silkroad. For more information, see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=5391 for instructions, notes, test results, etc.

Yes, for a windows based pc. But for a ps3 which dosnt have the correct drivers to run the graphics while in linux, it would be kinda hard to pull it up on there.

Silkroad runs on linux
Silkroad does NOT run on Linux on the PS3

The Linux distros that run on the PS3 do not have graphics acceleration.
Otherwise, we'd be seeing more people buying PS3s.. hell I'd have one XD

There might not be an accelerated graphics driver for the PS3 yet, but I'm sure one can be written. It would be best if it were a Linux kernel module instead of a Windows driver of course.

hmm, you can mod the linux to put ps3 to it potential, but you may have to do some hardware modification! O_O, lol and when u use a exe emz, u need a lowresource linux, cuz the ps3 isnt that powerful, like our pcz
