i was thinking of wasting some money. not too much, just thinking of buying 1 thing for my computer to make silkroad faster or perform better.
cause seriously i cant take this 5-minutes-to-load-up-silkroad thing especially when the server is full for 6 hours straight every morning.
like today i woke up, tried to log on at 7:00 AM and i was like oh ok it wont be a big deal someone will leave the server in a few mins so i kept logging in but it was always full until i finally got in like at 11:30 AM and then i saw like 49324032432 bots and 48324324 afkers in town its so lame

well i was thinking of buying either a better graphics card, (I have like a 5500 FX geforce graphics card or w/e somewhere there) , or either going to buy more ram (i have 512 mb ram)

so, which would make silkroad/my computer faster? more RAM, or a better graphics card?

I say ram. i had 412 mb of ram and now have 956 (bought more)
And silkroad opens in 8-15 seconds now and guess what no lag!

So in my opinion ram was what worked for me

More ram would help load times and overall performance, even though your video card is old. I'm pretty sure ram is cheap at the moment.
2gb would be ideal, more than that is overkill.

Without doubts, three things which will cost you.

RAM
Video card
CPU

More RAM means less HD writing which means faster response from the game.

Better video card with more VIDRAM means more clarity in the game.

CPU is a must, a good strong CPU, a dual core can help a lot also.

Dual core won't do much for Silkroad.

Silkroad so lame it will run off of one core right now. Joymax did nothing to the game to take advantage of the new dual core technology.

Hell they did nothing to even take advantage of the new video cards. Its why Silkroad doesn't run as well as it should on great machines.

If your going to buy more ram, make sure what type of ram it takes, and check the max amount of ram your motherboard can take, or you will fry it.

It depends. If you have a old computer with DDR RAM, than upgrading RAM isn't a good deal nor is it effective. In that case, if you have a AGP 8X slot and a FX 5500, upgrading to a 6000+ would be better.
The most economic and high-performing solution would be to save up to buy a new system with a dual-core, DDR2, SATA, and PCI Express.

I used to run SRO in 516mb Ram, then I bought a 1 G bar and now its running smooth

Graphics card only gives you better graphics, RAM gives you quicker response in battle = OWNAGE

Technically speaking, incorrect. CPU makes the computer faster, but big applications devour great amount of memory, the more memory is taken, the more Windows is forced to write a buffer zone on the hard drive to handle these huge chunks of memory i.e. virtual memory. The more the computer needs access to VM the slower it gets as it must write in and write out of the VM.

CPU is the central core of the computer, a slow CPU and a huge amount of RAM won't make a computer faster, not really that much faster because there is still lots of VM to manage every second and milisecond.

RAM is the key for huge applications like SRO, dual core can be set so that only 1 core is used for SRO alone, also a good graphic card (doesn't mean that a card that has 256 MB of video memory is always better than a card that has 128 MB of video memory) will accelerate a great deal SRO since it can draw on a chip build only to manage video memory.

So again, the basics are there, RAM, CPU, video card. Pushing things further along, a GOOD hard drive is always recommended since the faster the drive, the faster the page in's and page out's of VM.

You wont fry your motherboard, you cant put a DDR2 or SDRAM in a DDR slot, the voltage might be off a tenth of a volt . but still got to select the maximum per slot.

But i have a program that scans your pc's components, and tells you the maximum amount of memory that your pc can take, eg. my max is 2034mb. If anyone wants the program to try out, Click here

RAM is your anwers oh and make sure you have a good gfx card too if not buy them both xD

i bought ram and i now have 1.3gb and sro runs nice sometimes it laggs like in hotan... but runs well

Ah, here's something I can relate to

I just upgraded my PC; bought RAM and new card le grafique. Nothing serious, just a cheap upgrade until I get a whole new PC...

So, before upgrade I had 384 mb ram and GeForce 2 MX (yep, that crap).
Game ran relatively smooth on open fields and spaces with little people, with details on minimum.. But everything else just sucked Loadings could have easily taken over 1 minute (in Hotan even longer).
FPS was really bad in crowded placed, especially Hotan which was almost unplayable (maybe 5-10 FPS)...

So I bought 1 GB of RAM (so now i have 1.3) and GF 6200 (which I intend to overclock any moment heh).
Now loadings take only few seconds, I teleport almost instantly and everyting runs pretty smooth on medium and high details with bloom effect on (except complex shadows).

Here's a a good thing to watch when determining if your PC is running low - watch the hard disk's (red) LED on your PC : if it constantly flickers during loadings and gaming, you need more RAM

And, concerning the most important components for gamimg - RAM and GPU. New games are all about big detailed textures and pixel shading... There's not much that CPU really needs to process, except physics, but even that is becoming an individual component with PPU (phyisics processing units) coming...
