HOWTO: Install Europe ahead of time. SS included.

Cross-post from tavern: (original by myself)

I've managed to trick it into thinking that Silkroad Europe has been installed.

Note that I did this all in Ubuntu, so I don't know how to do it in Windows (though I suspect you can get it to work pretty easily.)
First, you will need to get the Abyss Web Server. I used linux edition and put it in my Desktop (after untar). Now you go to your Desktop, and go to abyssws/htdocs. Then make a folder called notarget. Go into it. Make another folder called clientcgi. Now make a file called vchk.txt Open it and put in 119. Then save. Now you need to go to System > Administration > Network. Move to tab Hosts. Click Add, IP Addr: 127.0.0.1 Alias: silkroadonline.net. Now go back to terminal, and type sudo apt-get install rinetd to install rinetd to get the loopback to work. Then sudo nano /etc/rinetd.conf and add the line 127.0.0.1 80 127.0.0.1 8000 Now, sudo /etc/init.d/rinetd restart. Now in terminal, cd ~/Desktop/abyssws. Execute abyss web server with ./abyssws Now load firefox, and go to 127.0.0.1:9999. Select english. Make a username and password. Login. It should say "Default Host running on port 8000". Click Configure, then go to General. Under Advanced Perimeters, click Edit. Go to the Custom HTTP Headers section and click add. The Virtual Path: * Header Name: ETag Header Value: "78752b1c35bdc71:436" (with quotes). OK. Add again. Virtual Path: * Header Name: Accept-Ranges Header Value: bytes OK. OK. OK. Restart. Now, when you try to go to silkroadonline.net, it should take you to your web server. Now go to your home directory. Rename .wine into something like .winebackup so you keep your old wine programs, as Silkroad Europe will try to delete your old installation. You won't be able to get your old programs back until you change .winebackup back to .wine. Now type winecfg in terminal. Set silkroad to Windows 98. OK. Now cd to the folder with your Europe installation program (exe). wine SRO_Europe_blabla.exe. It should work.

No responsibility if you are banned, bad thing happen, etc.

That's because it's WINE Desktop, it's not meant to look pretty, just provide a place to put your crap. It's really handy because it lets you run games that normally only run fullscreen in a window, or keep all the windows of a certain application in a single window (kinda like photoshop does)

An image of the WINE desktop being used to have SRO in a window. Yes, SRO has a windowed mode, but it causes a lot of problems in WINE for some reason.

This isn't actually the desktop anyone uses, which is why it doesn't need to look pretty. This is more of a game management tool than it is a

Your point? The client doesn't do anything yet, so installing it is pointless no matter how you do it. Your post owns itself though, because the registry sucks all sorts of ass. Seriously, the registry is an EXTREMELY bad system to have.

Did you read my post? I know *how* to do it, it's just extremely slow and buggy, which is why running it in fullscreen mode (the client thinks it is) inside a Window (thanks to WINE) is much smoother.

You can probably get this method to work on windows too, you get the Abyss web server and set that up with the same files in the same directory and the same custom http headers. Just make sure you have abyss listening on port 80, then using the hosts file you can redirect silkroadonline.net to 127.0.0.1.

I'm not sure there were that much risks anyway. I mean, I'm only lv 29 after 1 year of gameplay, which pretty much tells me there's too much grinding in this game anyway. And I got the idea from reading a topic in tavern where someone tried to trick the installer by setting the date forward, as well as another where a person could open the executable with WinRAR and see all the game files (though they wouldn't extract). And since I realized I would be going on vacation on the day Silkroad came out, I got bored and managed to install it early.

In Windows, you probably need to get the Abyss Web Server 1X, and run it. Then go to the htdocs folder, and create a folder called notarget, then make another folder called clientcgi in notarget. Then make a file, vchk.txt, and put "119" inside it (without quotes). Then start the webserver, and logon to the server at 127.0.0.1:9999. Select english and enter password, then it should say "Default Host running on port 8000". Click Configure, then go to General. Change the port number from 8000 to 80. Then under Advanced Perimeters, click Edit. Go to the Custom HTTP Headers section and click add. The Virtual Path: * Header Name: ETag Header Value: "78752b1c35bdc71:436" (with quotes). OK. Add again. Virtual Path: * Header Name: Accept-Ranges Header Value: bytes OK. OK. OK. Restart. Now, you need to edit your hosts file (windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts) and add 127.0.0.1 silkroadonline.net Now, when you try to go to silkroadonline.net, it should take you to your web server. Then start the client and install.

To be fair, SRO runs on WINE nearly out of the box.

He's just making a web server, and pointing himself at it. It's not really TOO amazing, although I do have to give him props for making a guide
