i got fraps 2.7 blah blah a long time ago and wanted to upgrade to 2.8 but the demo version of fraps leaves a license in your registry, so i cant use it.

Gamecam is an alternative, but I didn't like it.
Fraps 2.7 is fine for me.

Have you looked at Taksi Desktop Video Recorder?

It's open source, easy to use, and very configurable.

I use Taksi for my recordings and it does a grand job.

However, it is a pain to configure at times and it does no FPS compensating. This can cause your films to go slower/faster than they should depending on the current set of FPS. I believe that FPS compensation is to be in the next release.
