All of (Chinese) Silkroad is strongly based on Chinese history, so most of the weapons and garms you can find references to.

In the movie Kung-Fu Hustle, there is a scene where the 4th Degree spear in game is used (the part with the 3 heros vs. 2 blind playing guys).

the 1st~5th degree spear is common, but from that onwards it seems the developer shifted to fantasy instead.

some popular fictional chinese characters that used the spears:
the 1st degree is used by Sha Wu Jin from Journey to the West

the 2nd degree is used by Xu Ning from Water Margin

the 3rd degree is used by Zhang Fei from Romance of the Three Kingdoms

the 4th degree is the average everyday spear that most soldiers have -_-

the 5th degree is used by Lu Bu from Romance of the Three Kingdoms
although there are different concept arts of the one he used, some of them consist of only one of the two curved blades seen in SRO

=========

the 4th degree glaive is used by Guan Yu from Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Like happynoobing said, Joymax stated that until degree 5 the equipment was based over real pieces of equipment. However, 6th degree onwards they decided to fantasy a bit.

I've seen the 1st degree spear being used on other places. I think it was another game, but I don't remember very well. The 2nd degree spear looks ordinary for me. And halberds rock :D

Well since we get both Zhang Fei's and Guan Yu's weapons, what about Liu Bei's double swords? :P
