How many players can each server hold?

Just wondering, How many players can each server hold?

And also, people have been saying increasing the amount the servers can hold would reduce lag... my point of view is that IT WOULD INCREASE IT.

WHY?

Because then you'd have to load more character models when entering a town etc.

More players = LAGZ0R.

Only true thing about that, is that if you have more players connected with the same connection, lag would be greater.

More space + Same amount of people = Less Lag
More Space + More People = Same Lag
More Space + Less People = Way Less Lag

Same Space + More People = More Lag
Same Space + Less People = Less Lag
Same Space + Same People = Same Lag

Either way, more space wins.

Someone once posted that each server can hold 17.500 players, don't know if that is correct.

This was taken from an Interview with JM on the 28th September 2006

N this is when the servers are crowded, so im guessing 5-6k max

Im sure it has increased since then

if the maps get extended, it will add to the server load, so even with more space and the same amount of players, there will be more lag.
it's not all about how many players are in a particular spot.
