There is an npc guide in the guides and tutorials section. He's on east side of jangan (upper right corner), if I remember correctly.

At the east city gate (might be west, but either way...) theres a fountain with some bridges and water and junk... behind it theres a monestary. The monk is standing right through the entryway.
