What's the first thing you do in a MMO?
What's the first thing you do in a MMO?
Made this cuz some idiot in C&S pissed me off with a stupid question.
What is the first thing you do when you first play a new mmo? (aside from logging on, like once you're in the game)
Honestly, the first thing I do in any new mmo is smash every button on my keyboard to see what does what. I than note the basics, like inventory, rest, chat, party, exchange, and stats. Next I look to see which keys bring up a strange menu that I've never seen before. Than I go exploring.

Once I tried Aion, i just followed along. Never strayed off track. Read the guide at Aion's site.
I'm still a newb but hopefully, I'll get better!

Re: What's the first thing you do in a MMO?
If I bought it from store I check for game manual, if there is one I read it, then I open options/preferences and arrange the game as I feel comfortable with and then read some basic help and walk around, test controls, explore surrounding NPC's, areas, etc.
Guess this is pretty much what I do in every game
BTW How did he piss you off?
Did you kick him in the balls while exploring the keys?

Find the begin NPC and just follow from there, buttons are usually the same and you'll learn them during quests.

Props to chrisorg for the sig <3

Well, before I play any MMO I always research it a bit just so I know i'm not wasting my time with the MMO and the character.

Re: What's the first thing you do in a MMO?
research the mmo first. I mean you have to be pretty dumb to just look at a couple youtube videos or screenshots and then download the game. Nothing is worse than waiting 3 or 4 hours, making accounts, and playing the game only to find out that its terrible

Just off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure having your balls ripped off by a hairy man is much worse...

I don't read shit. First thing I do is try to get ass far on the map as lvl 1 as I can. If I can reach high lvl mob areas( like lvl 100+) and not die as lvl 1, I uninstall the game.
Example, Jade Dynasty.

Re: What's the first thing you do in a MMO?
In SRO I didn't do jack but it was my 2nd MMO, after SRO ~mid 2007, when I started moving onto other MMOs~ I will do the following:
Research the game:
Is it Popular? Number of reviews, how much information google drags up.
Does it have PvP, specifically Battlegrounds?
Payment Options (F2P/P2P/Item Mall/Subscription)?
How is the PvE (Raiding/Instances/Dungeons?)
Quest-Based Leveling, hard grind, or a good mix?
Are the player-based reviews positive, negative, or meh?
Does it have a large fan-forum? (This is where you see the true face and condition of the game)
Gold farming/selling problem?
3rd party program problem?
Customer Support?
Once all that is done I move on to classes:
Classic class structure of:
Tank
Healer
Melee DPS
Ranged
Magic DPS
Curse Class
Poison Class
Then I pick a class and start planning my build. While I'm doing all of that I'm thinking of a name to suit my toon. Once I get a good feel for the game ~1 month of playing~ I start researching the PvP Meta & other classes, performing test, seeing what works, and what doesn't.

I hate doing quests. They take too long time.
The first thing I do is, as thread starter said, press nearly all the buttons and see what it does

Re: What's the first thing you do in a MMO?
First thing I do in a new mmo is get severely pissed off. Walking into a new mmo is like going to a different country with an entirely different culture and language. Also, nothing pisses me off more than to not know where 1 single npc is located, nor their names, or their titles. So I have no choice but to be to total newb and either wonder until I get sick of the game or ask questions and hope that im either answered, or not mocked for my newbness.
Also, I check to see if inventory is the letter "I" or "B" then I realize what the general layout will be for the keymapping. But I always forget anyways and pound the wrong button to bring up my inv.

Re: What's the first thing you do in a MMO?
Before I even play it, I read guides, see what the gameplay is like, assess user feedback, decide on a class (usually healer/paladin type) and then download and play.
Next step is either get tired of the bots (if it's SRO) or get so busy at work that I have to pretty much quit playing.
