I heard Windows 7 comes with a built in XP option or something? So wouldn't you just be able to tell the Silkroad client to run in the XP version of Windows7 and you'd be fine?

Yes it has a built-in XP mode, but I see no reason why SRO couldn't just run in native Windows 7. Trying to run SRO in XP-mode would add unnecessary overhead.
A tiny, tiny voice in my head keeps whispering to me telling me to download and install Windows 7 on my system. I keep trying to ignore that voice. I guess I could dual boot it along with Ubuntu. Not sure the memory requirements for Windows 7. I only have 2 gigs RAM.

No no, don't get me wrong, I agree that SRO should run in the actual Windows 7. Just saying that if it doesn't, that XP mode is always there.

Windows 7 is ligher than Vista ... you can stall even with 1GB memory and it runs fine!

I'd bet it work work fine too, since Windows 7 can use a lot of the Vista drivers.
@Pr0metheus - Win 7 RC's min. requirements are the same as Vista Home Premium/Business/Ultimate (min 1 GB Ram).
+1 pequen...it's supposed to manage memory a lot better than Vista, especially video memory.

hmmmm... I suppose since I do work in IT security, I should probably have Windows and Linux both on my system... I should stay familiar with both operating systems.
Suppose that means I should multi-boot Windows 7/Vista/XP, Linux (Red Hat, SUSE, Gentoo, AND Ubuntu), Solaris 10, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD...

Too bad OS X won't install on my system.

Yeah I didn't really plan to put Vista on my system. I don't actually have the means to do so anyway.
I'm actually about to reinstall my system from scratch though. I'm running Gentoo right now, but it's starting to annoy me. I was going to just put Ubuntu 9.04 on it, but now I'm debating if I want to dual-boot Ubuntu with Windows 7, or even tri-boot with Solaris or something else. I guess I could pick one OS and run the others in a virtual machine.

I saw that that mode is not designed for games, so it might not work on that. But as far as the topic asks, I have silkroad running at max settings (no shadows, lol) at 1920x1080 on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and it runs just fine.

Can you really play SRO in XP Mode? I thought XP mode was just virtualization thru VirtualPC so it dont support 3D acceleratin?

At least according to
this site, it won't work.
Otherwise, the virtual XP desktop behaves pretty much as you'd expect, with a couple of exceptions. There's no explicit way to shut down, and closing Virtual PC will hibernate the image by default. The software also lets you run XP in full-screen mode, but with a little pop-out bar at the top to prevent you from trapping yourself in. Oh, and OpenGL/Direct 3D games don't appear to work.
Of course it's nothing official, just a review. I remember seeing something about OpenGL/Direct3D not working in XP-Mode from other sites as well.

then what the hell is the big deal with microsoft going around flaunting this XP mode. if it's the same thing as downloading VIrtualPC and running XP, then who gives a fck? If it can run native XP mode, then it'd be a diff story.

Makes sense that Microsoft wouldn't want to allow us to download a prior version of Windows 7 (e.g., the beta version) when a newer RC is available.

The VirtualPC XP-Mode in Windows 7, from what I understand, is supposed to be more integrated into Windows 7 itself. From what I read, it's supposed to present the XP applications as if they are part of Windows 7, instead of just running those apps inside a VirtualPC window.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong? I think it has two modes: full XP (in a VirtualPC window) and individual applications "appearing to be" natively running in Win7. I know, for example, if you install an app like MS Office 2000 in XP-Mode, the shortcuts to it will show up in the Windows 7 start menu.
