Just long enough to possibly get some people's account info, the ones that are dumb enough to use the same logon info as they use in the real iSRO.
You can host a server on a LAN.

If it comes to blows, they can just say in their defense that they had to make it because JM were incapable of running the game themselves.

And about it being illegal, it aint. You didn't copy anything, you used their client files, but those were freely downloaded from their own site. You can do with them what you like.
I'm all for the idea of private servers if indeed they are legit and legal. However, just because you can freely download the sro client from Joymax's website doesn't mean you can do what you want with it. What license is SRO released under? If it's under a license similar to the GPL, then yes you can do what you want with it, including modify it and redistrubute it. What does Joymax's license, or terms of use, say? Do they only allow you to use it to connect with their servers?
I think they should allow you to connect with other private servers. Perhaps just disable Item Mall features so the private server owners can't make money off Joymax's game.

PR0METHEUS wrote:servers? off Joymax's game.
the biggest problem will be who has the time and money to actually host this for free, for example if you compare this with WoW then donations will be needed to at least manage the data traffic and usually the better private servers end up dead to no donations.
well if a donation means free "silk" then here i come no doubt.
running such a server will take a lot of dedicated people to at least not make it end like the silkroad we currently have.

MasterKojito - Well I suppose you could run it in a LAN. Joymax wouldn't know, although it is still potentially illegal (depending on Joymax's terms of use for the client software). Besides, how many players would be on the LAN? A LAN server isn't something those of us on SRF could join when we're all located in different areas of the world.
StealMySoda - That wouldn't be much of a defense. I guess someone should reverse engineer Windows Vista and release their own version, claiming they had to do it because Microsoft is incompetant.

If this emu does come to realization, I think the word will get out quickly via SRF and in game - you won't have any problem getting players. I think you will have many legits that have quit over the last year return to the game. I think you will have a stronger community of serious legit SRO players and ultimately give the BIG MIDDLE FINGER to JM.
I will be watching this carefully as well with contained excitement.....I have only been playing 6 months and don't have the memories of the old days which I read were much more fun than now and way less bot infested.
Stallowned if this kicks in for real you can come back and be my lacky

@Above, indeed:
If the private server software will be released it would chance whole SRO. Its like the dedicated servers of Counter-strike enc. You just have your own favo server where you play alot. I dont know what JoyMax does when this is comming out. I think a lot of players leave the official servers. And start over. People (like deacon) offerd to replace the char in the server. So you got better control on a server, more GM's and more fun
And about the sue. They wont they cant and they will not do that. If they do it, its strange because they didnt do something against those bot sellers.
This would be awesome dmn

Don't you think: "Why are there so many private wow servers if it's illegal?"
That's because it isn't. And for the you can't do with it what you want idea lemme give you a good recent example:"Microsoft released a firmware update for your xbox360 that doesn't allow modified xbox360's on their network" Now, modifying your console isn't illegal, you just can't use it on their network. The same applies to joymax and blizzard, you're allowed to modify their stuff, but you can't run it on their network.

Well for the record, I know absolutely nothing about wow and even less about any private servers for wow or their legality.
I do see your point though. The more I think about it, the more I figure my original stance works better for software you actually purchase a license for. When you buy a license for Microsoft Windows XP, you cannot modify the software. You can modify its configuration, but not the software itself, meaning the source code. On the other hand, with Silkroad, you don't purchase a license.
What about other companies that run different versions of SRO, like vSRO? Do they pay any license fees to Joymax? Or did they just release their own "private" SRO server accessible to people in Vietnam, and Joymax makes nothing out of it? I don't know.
I'm just presenting different sides of the argument here. I'm not sure what to think in the end.

If it's anything like the one last year, it'll rob everyones logins and it won't be just an exe you install, it'll be a bunch of stuff where you really have to know what your doing before the game even starts up.
It's a nice idea though but I'll be surprised if it works out.

Yeah, if you have to install ANY software just to use a private server, I won't do it. If all I have to do is change an IP address or two in a .pk2 file, then *maybe* from a computer segregated from the rest of my network.
Even then, I'd have a completely new character, or the same character, with a different set of login credentials so it has nothing to do with my iSRO account. I'd also be sure to have my IDS up and running to monitor the traffic between me and the private server. TRUST NO ONE!

Yeah... that doesn't sound good to me. I'll just let everyone else get all excited about it and see what happens when those 2 or 3 other programs get installed on their systems and mine stays clean

They actually do purchase a license, but that's because they run their servers using joymax's server files (which are copyright protected). However, creating a private server like this doesn't violate the copyright law at all because you're running it on your own environment. (environment means the stuff you use to run it, in this case created by you or another person not in anyway related to joymax.)
Hope this clears the copyright/license part for you
Btw: environment is the good word, enviroment is common but not the real word! I know this because i had a discussion with my english teacher who said that it was enviroment! muahahha

Well if you open up a private SRO server, and are not using Joymax's server files, then you must be using your own home-grown files. Who's to say these files will work any better than Joymax's? Is this private server being run by another company, or some home user? How much do you trust the home user?
Someone above pointed out that you will have to install 2 or 3 other programs on the client side to be able to use the private SRO server. If that's the case, I don't trust it.
