I ran a server also, running ban lists from AASA(not the best AC around but oh well), so I'm well aware of the ins and outs of server running and yada yada.
But PB isn't as useless as you think, sure it got the blame(rightfully so) for the amount of hackers in 2.3(i think it was, where you couldn't even get on PB servers due to the problems), but with 2.4, 2.5, 2.6. THere was no new encrypted file system it was all down to PB. Sure maybe once a month you would encounter a hacker, but never more than that.
When they get off their asses and do something they are a REALLY good company and I think starting them of in an MMO would be a nice challenge for them that would motivate them.
As for the hardware cloaking, I don't think the average brain capacity to even turn on a microwave so expecting them to edit and successfully cloak their hardware MAC guids is something I don't think we should be afraid of.
Sure there are gonna be the odd few that can bypass the system but your gonna get that with any system.

i duuno much about PB, but i mean its only used for FPS right? I guess there must be a reason for that. rampant botting can only be stopped by the users, too many users though feel it necessary to bot, hopefully with euro that will stop.

Re: Why SRO needs Punkbuster

If any of you have played any major FPS you will have encountered Punkbuster. Although designed mainly for FPSs I don't see why it cant work for SRO.Major Features in PunkBuster™
(some editions of PunkBuster™ do not have all of these features)
* Real-time scanning of memory by PB Client on players' computers searching for known hacks/cheats
* Throttled two-tiered background auto-update system using multiple Internet Master Servers to provide end-user security ensuring that no false or corrupted updates can be installed on players' computers
* Frequent status reports (highly encrypted) are sent to the PB Server by all players and the PB Server raises a violation when necessary which causes the offending player to be removed from the game and all other players are informed of the violation
* PB Admins can also manually remove players from the game for a specified number of minutes or permanently ban if desired
* PB Servers can optionally be configured to randomly check player settings looking for known exploits of the game engine
* PB Admins can request actual screenshot samples from specific players and/or can configure the PB Server to randomly grab screenshot samples from players during gameplay
* An optional "bad name" facility is provided so that PB Admins can prevent players from using offensive player names containing unwanted profanity or racial slurs
* Search functions are provided for PB Admins who wish to search player's keybindings and scripts for anything that may be known to exploit the game
* The PunkBuster™ Player Power facility can be configured to allow players to self-administer game servers when the Server Administrator is not present entirely without the need for passwords
* PB Servers have an optional built-in mini http web server interface that allows the game server to be remotely administered via a web browser from anywhere over the Internet
I encountered it when I played America's Army and it worked a charm. It would give JM more time to work on the game, as Punkbuster would be the ones dealing with the bans and yada yada. Any modified game files would result in a kick from the server.
Maybe todays turning back on of GG wasn't the "big update" but if it was, then JM should really look at Punkbuster as a possibility. Theres no reason why evenbalance cant expand to MMOs
Share your thoughts ^_^
lol ive always wondered what a punkbuster was. I always kept getting kicked off fps games and said punkbuster. Im like wtf.
But i guess its this then. Im using G15 and G5 Mouse and Keyboard so its probably it.

Punkbuster cannot be installed on a server of that scale.
Period.
It is for FPS's for a reason.
Feel free to email them, they'll tell you exactly what I said.
Its set to work with certain engines and variables, ones that SRO does not have.
For example, Punkbuster would certainly ban for -
Shottime == 0.001 in America's Army.
However. There is no such thing as "Shottime" in Silkroad Online. If it was searching for a bot system, all a bot system is, is an advanced macro program. Macro programs are on computers all the time, for example, I have a macro program for Rondo's, does that mean I should be banned?
Think of it this way.
Punkbuster administers client side code in FPS's. Bots do not edit integral files of the game, or any at all (I believe.), The only possible way to completely wipeout bots is an in-house developed monitoring program that runs alongside SRO. Xtrap and GG do not do this kind of monitoring. Thus - and Joymax probably don't have an anti-cheat division.
And before anyone else asks, VAC would not work either.
Edit: I just realised how old this topic was. I am such a moron.
