thieves vs hunters

is it just me or do the thieves usually get mobbed by the hunters in trades??
i was watching a trader go from constantinople to samarkand and he had a 2 star trade + 3 lvl 50+ hunters............2 thieves lvl 65 and 67 approached them and they got OWNED by the hunters
if one of the hunters wasnt a cleric, the thieves would have won but i wanted to know if there is more hunters or more thieves in the game(excluding npc thieves)
