Scams and how to prevent it.

Post by Cerus »

Its actually not that hard to spot a scam in game, one just has to remember that NOTHING IS FOR FREE especially from a stranger.

Would you give out your stuff for free to some1?
Would you tell a secret that would benefit you to a total stranger?
Answer is no.

Here I will list out the scams that I've seen and experienced personally, hope it will help.

1) Selling Silk
Silk is NOT TRANSFERABLE item.
The only way the other person can buy silk for you is by obtaining your account password and login name.
By giving it out, you normally end up with 0 silk and ur items being cleared out.

2) Selling Astral
Astral is another non transferable item.
Which means you have to hand over your item to him/her in order for him to Astral your item.
Scammer normally ask for the gold and then your weapon/item to b Astraled. In normal case, you lose your gold and item.

3) Secret Spot
There is no such thing as secret spot that makes your items +11/+8/+watever.
The scammer will ask you to show your weapon as their first step. Then they will comment on your weapon asking you y was it still +4 or whatever. Proceeding to tell u about the glitch. Of which you can enhance your weapon just by dropping at a secret spot and it will turn into a SoS/+11.
So, if you follow their step, as soon as you drop your weapon, they will pick it up. and you end up screaming SCAMMER!

4) Swaping Item during Exchange
Be careful when you see people selling things at a rediculous cheap price.
Always CHECK THE ITEM THOROUGHLY before you approve the exchange. Haste gives you no good.
Scammer do this scam by spamming in public saying they want to sell something. For eg a SOM 32 Glavie, you whisper for 20M he say OK! (OMG CHEAP!). The next step is as always, he show you the SOM glavie. Everything is good, but he purposely bargain abit and cancel the exchange window a few times making it real and also make you wanna get that thing fast. In the last exchange window, he will place a SoS rather than a SoM. If you didn't check you will end up buying a SoS rather than a SoM for 20M (OMG RIPOFF!!)

5) Websites Offering Free Silk
There are players who offer free silk in game. They advertise a website of which u need to fill in details or something else (depends what they want to do to you really).
So if you do decide to visit, i recommend only if your computer's anti-spyware is up to date just to prevent key-logger and etc.
If the website lets you fill in your details, in no circumstances fill in any of your information. Or your account's item will be cleared and more.

Oh ya, theres no such thing as a second hand item, only unrepairable and reduced durability items

Scams are everywhere in SRO, we are playing against real ppl here. The key point is do not be greedy, if something is too good to be true, it probably is not true after all. Be careful, do not trust strangers (even some friends steal :( ) Nothing is for free, Not in the real world, not here in SRO.

There are more out there, but these are only the few that I can think off. Feel free to add more and i will edit the main post. Hope this help.

NOTE: Scams can be obvious to some and not to others, alot still fall victims. So to those who think its obvious, no flame pls :)

"Nothing is free" only if it comes from me :D sometimes i see someone and i happen to have an item in my inventory that i would npc... and as npc doesnt give much money anyway, i give it to them. I really hate to find items and waste them selling to npc, and i don't stall so... let them have a good use...

Btw, great guide, there are some people that still fall for this traps.
"secret spots"

Good guide for noobies. But anyone who's played for at least a week should be smart enough to avoid scams, unless they're just plain retarded.
