I used to have the same problem when I first dated my gf.
I try so hard to come up with something to say, but its usually end up pointless and stupid.
Sometimes its good to enjoy silence. Just a moment when you can just simply enjoy each other's presence.
But if its really awkward, just look at your surroundings and find something to talk about. Usually you'll find a thing or 2.
but don't force it, girls enjoy those emotional moments too :p
Edit: being aware of your surroundings is key.
Some suggested topics:
Your /her weird dream somebody in school your /her childhood your /her favorite food /toy Ask her out (hehe) <-- works really good when there's silence etc.
sometimes its better to talk about your side of the story before you ask her about it. Because it means you're willing to share your secrets with her. Girls like that stuff. when you're done with your talk, pop this in "so, how about you?". congratulations you just wasted another 30 minutes .

that's not bad actually another thing is the follow up --> your next question after that is, "hey wanna go eat a strawberry cake sometime?" don't over do it though, you know what i mean.
edit: and since you know her for a long time awkward silence is so much more common, and its not a bad thing, it means you guys know each other enough that you don't know what to talk about no more hehe. Just give it a little more incubation and you'll be ready to pop the question hehe

Think of it this way, if your having "awkward silences" try to solve the issues causing the problem as opposed to making something random to say. Chances are its not gonna work out, simple as that.

Say some out of the blue, not even part of the conversation. Something that make she goes, huh? Jog her not to think that you're boring. Trust me on this. But not say something geeky shit about games, 70% of the time, depending on the moment you are in, give her a small compliment about her accessory(no not in Silkroad), like 'aww thats cool what you wearing, where did you get that?' then you'll buy yourself 10min when she talks about how she goes to the mall with her friends and get it, how her choice between colors, then you go, "Yes, uh-huh, yea, uh huh" in that time while you still thinking about sro and think whats the next thing you gonna say.. then if you don't know what to say, suddenly draw her attention to something around your environment, 'Oh look, a bird, do you know birds migrate 20 thousand mile every year to lay eggs?' and she goes, really? And you goes, 'No not really, i just made that up' lol, then she'll laugh and you have more things to say...
Gosh sorri, i'm just blabbing. I don't know if it work for you but, girls like guys who entertain them so just say anything, anything.. not about yourself, until she specifically ask about you. Anyway, hope that help, i aren't pro but thats my two cents. And it works in club

look for nething interesting, then tell her how YOU feel about it. tell her what YOU think. keep saying YOU statement...or in this case, "I" statements. she'll start saying what SHE thinks about it n blah blah blah. keeps the convo going.
