1-the specification for your choise
2-the costumer service and how supportive they are
3-the battery life time
4-put something here
5-and here
make sure even if your godly laptop kicksass you still might get hardware problems

and even so you need a good costumer service for your laptop maintenance, around here HP has good specification but the costumer servicer lasts one whole month for replacing the damaged motherboard with another one

If you want to game, get a desktop instead and a cheap laptop for taking around with you.

I don't care for battery life time
after a while it turns to shit anyway and you have to buy a new one.

Well, this is what I check for starters when I'm buying/building a new PC:
-What is its primary purpose?
-How much money am I willing to spend?
-AMD or Intel?
From these basics you can derive the rest of the questions. Let's assume laptop.
-Will I game on the laptop? If so, what is the maximum gaming resolution I may use? Buy over, so you won't need to upgrade (difficult if not impossible on a laptop)
-CPU - gotta be Intel IMHO.
-Size of the laptop, portability. Gaming/business laptops don't always go well together.
-Battery life. If I'm on a plane, I might want to watch a DVD or put together a spreadsheet or powerpoint presentation.
-Expandability of RAM.
-How big of a hard drive? Are there enough USB ports that I can add a backup external hard drive?
-Customer service/vendor response time/warranty.
-Price comparison to other laptops in its class.
-Type of keyboard, size of keyboard. Nothing worse than a crappy KB on a laptop when you have to spend hours on it.
-Type of pointing device - trackball, mouse pad, stick.
-Bluetooth/wifi capability.
