Vampires have the same credibility as ghosts.
Only the superstitious believe in them.

I remember reading about a countess living in the mid-1500s-early-1600s, named Elizabeth Bathory*. Though not your typical bloodsucking vampire, she was convinced that blood was the elixir of life, so to speak, and was therefore convinced that bathing in blood would maintain her youthful appearance. Thus, she murdered hundreds of people, mostly young women, and bathed in their blood.
On a somewhat similar note, there are a couple rare diseases (Porphyria and Catalepsy) that gives you a physical characteristics to that of a vampire.
Porphyria is a rare disease characterized by irregularities in production of heme, an iron-rich pigment in blood. People with the more severe forms of porphyria are highly sensitive to sunlight, experience severe abdominal pain and may suffer from acute delirium...Some porphyria sufferers do have reddish mouths and teeth, due to irregular production of the heme pigment.

I've heard of a treatment in the past where they had to drink blood to restore balance (eating raw mean could well be part of that treatment). I'm not sure what the current treatment is, however.

I don't believe in vampires, but all myths were based on someone or something.
"Lisa, vampires are make-believe, like elves, gremlins, and eskimos."
"Oh, Lisa, you and your stories! 'Bart is a Vampire' ... 'Beer kills off brain cells' ... Now lets go back... to... that building... where bed and TV... is."
"I have never met a vampire personally, but I don't know what might happen tomorrow."
"I was particularly stunned by the casting of [Tom] Cruise, who is no more my Vampire LeStat than Edward G. Robinson is Rhett Butler."
"Following the Rumanian tradition, garlic is used in excess to keep the vampires away... Following the Jewish tradition, a dispenser of schmaltz (liquid chicken fat) is kept on the table to give the vampires heartburn if they get through the garlic defense."
