Gaia Online, the web's largets forum with over 600 million posts according to Big Boards, just got $8.3 million in venture capital funding. Investors included Benmark Capital and Redpoint Venture.
That's pretty amazing. The poster-boy for online forum success, just pulled in probably the largest investment ever for a forum community (though they aren't just a pure forum anymore--they include some MMORPG-like 3D chatrooms now, as well).

I use to play gaia online too, their forums were pretty fun i guess most people use the forums to get money in the game. everytime you post, you'd get like.. 3,4,5,6 gold so.. basically that's how they made their forums so popular. making money in game is hard enough, so they made getting gold easier by their forums.

lol i used to play it when my friends made me, i got banned on it for like 7 outta 12 reasons ( yeah better customer support than joymax) lets see.. attempting to sell ingame items for real money using macros spamming verbal abuse and more
since you get money for humping bushes and tree's and they were always in the same place i set up the tasker macro thingy to get gold for me.
I used to go on gaia. I was addicted with all the items you can buy, I had some amazingly rare items. Over there signatures are a huge market, people pay a TON for art of their avatars. They were smart with their donation program too, $2.50 gets you a letter which gives an item that would be discontinued the next month for the next letter item. Then I sorta drifted away from it, good source of info if your looking for music

This is the best forum ever, IMO. We're the only one with a jumping bunny, a guy that keeps humping another guy, a weird puppet with the head keeps on jumping and jumping, a cat with a green fruit on the head, a green fudge and much more use as avatars!

My friends and I used to post on Gaia a longgggg time ago because we liked the avatars. I remember during Easter, if I posted something and then refreshed the page, my topic would literally fall down to the 2nd page in seconds.
I didn't last long, too much spam and crap over there.
