Best recent movie i have seen is The h\Happening, good if you watch beyond the plot.
Though if you like the anime style, try Akira.

How can you recommend, "The Happening"? I almost drown myself in my diet pepsi and chok myself in my extra buttered pop corn while watching that movie. Its the worst movie of 2008, period. Gosh, what a waste of $15 to watch a bunch of people got killed but who knows what.

Its not what the movie was about, its more the hidden themes and ideas represented in it. I saw the entire movie as an extended metaphor for love and related quite closely to it.
A movie isn't about flashy affects or an interesting plot, but rather the way someone can interpret it and reflect upon it. If you saw nothing out of it than thats your loss, its hardly just of you to say its the worst movie of the year.

A film I've recently watched and very much enjoyed is The Last Samurai
Its about Japanese westernisation and how reforms came at the dear cost of traditions.
The abandoning of a ruling elite class and also the abandoning of culture and identity.
It also reflects the loss of cultural identity and traditions in the new generation of the countries in the Far East.
But if you just want to watch something for fun, don't watch it.
