Need Comp Advice

well it just so happens i FOUND, yes FOUND, a cpu, monitor, keyboard, and all the external wires included, outside today. :D

Someone just literally threw it away. Unfortunately the wires inside the main CPU were ALL cut off :banghead: dont know why in the world someone would do that as i see no use in doing so.

i went to the comp shop and they told me it would cost about $180 to fix everything. That includes putting a 160 GB hard drive, and repairing all the wires which takes a bulk of the price.

The comp itself from what i can remember had 1 GB Ram, not sure bout the video cards though. It was Intel Pentium 4 Centrino i think. And yes it is a Dell :(

Here is the Exact Price Listing:

160 GB Sata 7200 Hard Drive - $55.00
"Power for Dell" - $69.00
PC Upgrade and Repair - $59.00
Discount is $14.14 off gross amount.

So im sure spending around $230 (since im getting a wireless router for the internet) is better than buying a whole package brand new from local comp stores. Im not sure however if it is worth it. Would love to hear comments from u guys.

And yes i have already paid a deposit, so basically the deal is set, but this is thread is for em to repent on if u guys said it was a bad choice :banghead: .

if its not nasty and filled with crap and other stuff, then sure why not, if it sucks and looks crappy then might not be worth it

Installing a harddrive is as simple as sliding it into the slot, screwing it in, and connecting two wires.

Power supply is just screwing in a box, and connecting all of it's lose ends into the same shape socket of all your parts - really easy because the sockets are big and obvious.

I'd do it myself. Would take ~10 minutes to put everything in.

Better make sure all components you have now are actually working before you buy the rest.

Dunno why they're charging so much for the power supply. Dell PSUs are easy to find cheap... but the real kicker is that they're charging you $60 to install a power supply and hard drive... and IN A DELL. Why don't you just ask them for the parts and save the install fee? I guarantee you can figure out how to do it. You need a #2 Phillips head screwdriver.

Do Dells have proprietary cables or something? That's pretty lame.

I would take the thing to someone that knows about that stuff and have it checked over before you put money into it. I think it would be really frustrating to spend that kind of cash and have the thing die.

it may be worth the buy, but they through it away you know, maybe they through away cuz something got fried or sumthin so they were bored and cut up the wires (idk), so it's worth a try, but if there is just wires cut up like the power supply and ide and etc cords, just buy new ones, and go online and figure out how to install them if you dont already know how, and you can ask us on here to, i garuntee it would be cheaper just to buy the cords! so up to u m8
of course you'd have to buy a new powersupply if those cords were cut but ide or sata? they can be easily replaced!

thx for the replies everyone.

well i got the comp to work and everything.
i bought the wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) and i configured it.
it works on my main pc...but i cant add the new pc to the network. :banghead: :banghead:

i have literally tried hundreds of ways to get the comp on. i even called technical support fr the router guys and the cable modem guys. but to no avail.

the new pc just doesn't detect a connection at all. and yes the distance for the router is fine. i have already spent over 200 on the dam thing, and dont want it to go to waste. probably gonna go tomorrow to try to get a computer technician to come over and set it up himself. but ims ure he would do what i have already done and failed at.

so what do u guys suggest i do?
