idk if this is already posted, but this morning, a faculty of the
Delft University in the Netherlands had an electric failiure in one
of the coffee machines - yes, the coffee machine did it.
now, the building is history. good thing is that nobody got hurt.
Delft is the city i live in atm btw, and my brother studies on that
faculty. luckily he had his work all here at his appartment.
here a link to some photos. it's been going since 9.30 this morning,
and it's still on fire. half the building has already collapsed.

The real question is: "how did the fire spread so fast???"
I saw the newsreport on tv, part of the building even collapsed...

first of all, Delft is pretty close to the shore. that means, big wind.
second, one of my connections in the university told me they have tried
to stop the fire, they were at that coffee machine when it happened. turns
out there was a water leak over the weekend, so they shut off the main
water thing for the university. therefor, when the fire brigade wanted to
spray, they had no water, which took some time. another bad thing is, that
the fire started on the 7th floor, and none of the fire trucks could reach
that height. on top of that, the main road that runs through the university
terrain has been under construction for over a year now, so it's really hard
to even reach the place

>.> they were at machine when it started burning? as in they... more than 1 person? how did they get qualifications to teach if they cant put out a simple electric fire you dont even have to do much, just clear off the counter and it'll burn itself out
what one of them threw alcohol on fire thinking it would put it out? entire water lines thing doesnt make sense, what were they making coffee with if they didnt have water to put in, plus what school opens with no water? they expect no one to use restroom?

1) If there's a huge leak, you need to turn down the water supply. Else it would flood the whole school. Not putting warning signs might be a minor mistake though.
2) College students and most people who work there are smart enough to not throw alcohol on a fire. Silly remark imo. It's like throwing water on a burning deep fryer.

no avarage person is ever prepared for a fire. they spotted the coffee machine
smoking and melting. the water was off due to a water leak that same morning. they
had a melting, burning coffee machine, a room full of smoke, and a simple small powder
sprayer to get the fire under control. they had no chance, the fire brigade evacuated
them.

Yer i saw it to, very freaky.
The worst thing about it, is that all the work of the students is gone, but also a huge part of Dutch history. In the form of old photo's, documents, furniture by a famous designer. bah.
fire sucks.

Well, I think it was one of those big things which are standing on the floor. Add a water leak and water already on the floor: Electric machine IN the water, which will short circuit and catch fire.
And some reasons why the fire brigade wasn't able to fight the fire:
- Danger of collapsing so they couldn't go inside.
- From the outside, they couldn't reach it because there's a pond before the building.

Lol! Thats true indeed. Oh on my school, the few mocros (coz its VWO) ALWAYS wear caps. If they think they're cool with it, the way they wear it makes them look ridiculous

Nope not racist.
Its true. My school got 3 locations. ONe for the first two classes, one for VWO and one for the other levels.
On the vwo there are hardly any "non-dutch" people, while there are loads of them on the Havo and Vmbo. Its pretty more a fact than a racist remark.
Anyway the topic was about the university, and I just heard on the news that many of the chairs and scale-models are saved, because that part of the building is hardly damaged. Lucky them
