Buying a Mic

Post by Azilius »

I've been looking into buying a mic for Ventrilo/PS3 for quite a while now but the problem is I have no idea what to look for. I don't know any price ranges or even what's compatible. Thinking of spending maximum of 40$, any suggestions or help would be nice, thanks. :D

Hum.. the only advice I can give you is to buy a headset that doesnt hurt your ears after 30 minutes of playing.

Supposedly this is one of the best mics. I plan on purchasing one once I actually use ventrilo for something.

From experience, I would suggest getting a Razer Barracuda despite its price. You could get a brand new one for about $115 (or cheaper if you get them from amazon). Although it sounds a bit expensive, I would say that it's a very good investment because unlike most headsets, the headphones don't just die after a few months' use and the sound is exceptional. And don't let the mic's appearance fool you; it might be small but it's very good at picking up your voice and noise-cancellation. And the most important point of all, it allows you to play on for hours without feeling discomfort. Of course you're going to feel some later on (after about 5 consecutive hours of gaming) but the discomfort goes away after removing the thing for 5 minutes. The headphones could also be placed on 75% vol. so you won't have to place them on your ears during that short break. Just my 2 cents.

for just alone a microphone just get one for like $10 tops.
I hate headsets, they are stupid. Headsets let everyone hear your breathing and you're forced to use push to talk then.
I prefer to just speak without pressing any buttons so I have a microphone on my desk.

I assume you have boxes, I would definitely recommend switching to headphones though if that's the case. It's always terribly annoying to hear the ingame sounds from other players when they're playing. And you also have to use push to talk if you're playing with boxes.

I use this

It even has an option to mount it on the side of your screen! I just have mine a couple of inches to the left of my screen in front of my keyboard, I never notice it while gaming.
The microphone on the headset though... AAAHRG! GTFO OF MY SIGHT ALREADY!

He said sight, so sometimes it's in your peripheral vision. On the other hand I have no idea what you mean by having a mic in your ears.

Love my cheap ass $10 mic. Got my headset practically free with BC, not very good but does the trick if I don't want people hearing my conversation.
Just go to a hardware site that reviews or a hardware community site and search.
