No Silver Spooned Fool

Post by Grandpa »

What one thing would I want to teach if it were possible?

I was a late learner in life.
This thread is an attempt to share one of the things that was learned 'along the way'.

A website dedicated to "Educate, Amuse & Enrich".
If I were 20 or so today I'd be rich by now... (if that makes sense).
More like "If I only knew what I know now when I was twenty-something."
Bernard Baruch wrote:Quote from The Motley Fool website:
"The main purpose of the stock market is to make fools of as many men as possible."

Please take the moments needed to read through the first link especially.

Story of Bianca wrote:Looking at it another way, let's compare two teenagers and their lifetime savings habits.
Bianca baby-sits a lot and spends most of her spare time reading.
  • She saves $1000 a year starting when she's 15 and invests it in the stock market for 10 years earning 12% per year on average.
  • After 10 years, she comes out of her shell, stops adding money to her nest egg, and spends every penny she earns club hopping and on trips to Cancun.
  • But she keeps her nest egg in the market.

Story of Patrice wrote:Compare Bianca's story to that of her friend:
Patrice, who squandered her early paychecks on youthful indiscretions.
  • At age 40 Patrice gets a wake-up call when her parents retire on nothing but Social Security.
  • She starts vigorously socking away $10,000 every year for the next 25 years.

Guess who has more at age 65? That's right, Bianca. (You figured it was a setup, didn't you?)
Her 10 years of saving $1000 per year (just $10,000 total -- the same amount Patrice put away in just one year) netted her $1.6 million by age 65. Patrice, on the other hand, scrimped for 25 years to invest a quarter million dollars out of her own pocket and ended up with just under a million. Neither will be going to the poorhouse, but you see our point: Bianca's baby-sitting money grew for 50 years, twice as long as Patrice's, and Bianca barely missed it.

Every person here should own at least one stock.
:D ~Grandpa

If your parents are awesome, they should invest 100 dollars a month into your own private little fund, and they'll put it in some sort of high interest return thingmajigger, and by the time you retire, you're loaded!

thank you grandpa! Although I learned some of this stuff like 2 months ago, I've decided to squander my money, and try and get $100,000 by the time I'm 25, and then just let it collect interest, I can retire by the time I'm like 50 :)

... Just like farming in sro ;) sometimes going through a boring beginning phase, you get the best in the end.

Not everyone on this forums is a kid.
There are many members who are age 20+

...And why would he be to old.
There should not be an age limit to forums, I find it fun and interesting that he can share is knowledge with us. You should appreciate that :)

Minimum age requirements are always more effective than maximum age requirements.

I'm 12, like you. Seriously, if you doubt me and think me a liar, it's ok.
Here, have a pic that shows my age:

I've asked my son to do a search on a site that goes along with the topic.
It's a depressing view of America's future due to credit problems.
Something along the line of 'how it's too late', written by a CPA.

I'll post when he gets around to it, but I honestly believe this subject is worth consideration more than anything about 'me'.

Really hope you like the post on how to save money and the difference it makes if you do it early.
  • 8) Girl#1 saves $1000 a year starting when she's 15 and invests it in the stock market for 10 years only (total =$10k)
(earning 12% per year on average).
After 10 years she stops adding money to her nest egg.
  • Girl#2 at age 40 starts vigorously socking away $10,000 every year for the next 25 years
    = cost her $¼ Mil = $250k ($250,000.00).

Nice post (once again).
Im 16 myself and invest some money.
so far ive only gained profit.
just a little tip from me (for the ones who have never done it before but are thinking of doing so):
Why dont you make an Exel file, and just try investing in the market for once, only without real money (if its to much of a risk for you).
just say you'll invest 100 euros, or dollars.
check the price of whatever you'dd like to invest in like once every day (it aint 2 much work lolz) and see if that 100 dollar/euros rises :)
Get to know it, and see if you gain =]
If you want to play it safe you can also open an acount that goes with the market, for example in the netherlands you open an AEX acount, if the market goes up, so does your money, if the market goes down, you gain nothing (BUT lose nothing either ... so perfectly safe).

*reads on about personal finance*

DRIPS:

lol, don't you love the name? Dividend Reinvestiment Plans (Drips) allow you to buy one share (or more) for a single one time set-up fee.
You don't pay "brokerage" fees. More found > HERE <

We've purchased DRP accounts in about 12 companies for every child in my extended family.
The idea is for them to have a choice to contribute ½ of the X-mas money, ½ of their B-Day money or w/e income they have with little or no fees.
Selection is easy and can be as complex or simple as you want.
You like Coca-cola? They offer DRPs. Viagra? (Pfizer). Lol. Smoker? (Phillip Morris) Makeup? It goes on and on, thousands upon thousands of companies offer DRPs.

If you're an adult and wanna do a good thing for the future of a loved one, DRP accounts can be purchased under the UGTMA Universal Gift to Minors Act (in the US).
The idea is to get them excited to watch THEIR money grow as they grow up.
Feed the pig, oink!

My brother's children, my kids, my sister's daughter's kids... it doesn't matter.
If they are minors in my extended family, they own stock.
And when they get together for family reunion time?
One time I saw the older ones talking to compare "portfolios"
I'm like WTH :?
I've created monsters...

You can go to http://www.my.yahoo.com and make a 'fake' there too.
They do the math for ya. Good idea, "LillDev!l", ty.
Do it before DaddyDay (June) and then show your dad your finished product.
"Dad, check it out... I 'make a fake' and invested $15 per week.
This is how much I'd have now if it were real.
I know it's Father's day, but there are no "kids days" official...
    [Implied]: would you mind???"

Dad's reply: "Everyday is kids day"
You: "Precisely"

He'll be impressed by your understanding of DRIPS and UGTMA, guaranteed.

Grandpa can has mons :P

For $19.23 per week ($1,000.00 per year -or- $2.75 / day)
YOU TOO can has cheese:
