looking for a hair product

Post by fena »

my hair is about one and a half inches long - slightly less. it's pretty thin hair too.
every morning when I wake up, I use water and gel and make it kinda spoofy / frizzy, so it falls down over my forehead, but on the top, its frizzy as well, if that makes any sense. the thing is, after the gel dries, my hair hardens and looks it too.

is there any hair product out there that'll not give my hair that look, but make it pliable just like hair gel does? I can't just use more water. if I do, yeah, it looks less hard, but then I can't style it properly either. if its possible, I need something to make it look soft and even kinda wet looking as well. that'd be cool. but it has to be workable so I can use it to style my hair.

any such types of products? I'm not looking for a brand in particular - just the general kind, something I can buy from any haircutter/barber. I've heard that I could use hair wax, but how does that work? n my hair is pretty thin. I'll post a picture later if you guys need some more information.

n I'm on a budget here too, so nothing too expensive.

thanks for your help. (:

It depends on the kind of hair you have, more specifically it's thickness.

If you have a decent hair dresser, which hopefully you do, he/she should be able to tell you what type of hair stuff would work best with your hair. I use a textured grit, cream based wax, or very soft spray-on clay.

What's also important is what you do with your hair, I have the three products because they go on differently and they don't do the same things.

I'm no expert, but from your brief description, I would suggest using a pomade or really really soft putty. When you take it make sure you work it really well, you need to pull the fibres apart so it doesn't chunk up, and apply it to your hair DRY. The harden look comes from water or gel drying and leaving behind rock hard dehydrated hair. When you apply stuff to dry hair, you have to really work it in well and slowly, if you put in too much really fast it will build up at the front or back and leave you with a greasy palette of hair.

Never use clay with thin hair, it's too thick and builds up. I just went to my bathroom to check out what I have, and I have a "pliable fibre putty" with a "cream base" that I think would work well. The putty is for thin hair, and the cream base makes it "wet", easier to apply to dry hair. They don't always advertise them as creamy, you will have to open it and take a look.

edit:

Image

The one on the left is a "texture grit", you apply it with a bit of water to break it down and work it in. Usually anything you apply with water or in wet hair is to make it stand up, spike it etc.

The one on the right is the cream based putty, it's really soft and liquidy, as you can see. This stuff is used for styling and minor spiking, but usually styling.

Usually gay hairdressers do women's hair, dying, and stuff like that. Unless you're in a cheap place where hairdressers do both, you'll either have a woman or straight cutting your hair.

Keeping yourself clean and shit is one thing, making a culture out of it is another. Thank the Queer Eye boys for that.

lmfao.

thanks, dom. unfortunately, I don't really have a haircutter or stylist or anything. I go to a store and someone cuts my hair when I need it to be cut. and nothing fancy. they just take off about an inch and out I walk. but I'll definitely ask next time.
one thing - you mentioned that applying gel or any other product to wet hair gets you that hardened look? would it look less like that if I applied hair gel to dry hair?

thanks again!

Gel naturally gives you a hard/dried look. That's why it became popular in the 90s, for spiking; but now it's pretty much outdated. The best you could do is to apply it to towel dried hair and use a blow dryer to blow it into what you want, and it will have less of a hard silicone look.

I love the smell of crew. I bought jumbo bottles of their shampoo and conditioner a couple years ago, and now I can't stand the smell on myself anymore from overuse, but it smells good on other people.
