Okay so i got a math test 2morrow (grade 10), and my buddy already had the test. He said there is 1 question he didnt know the answer to. He said the question was like like 0y=7 and you have to explain what that means. He cant remember the exact question but its something like that. Does any1 have an idea about what im saying

if that is the question then i believe the answer would be no solution
what topic are you guys getting tested on?

so i would just right the line(equation) had no solutions...becuause...

if it really is 0y=7 then there's no way to graph it, so yes just put no solution

okay thx

and also thanks for quick reply

it just hit me
technically if you divide any number (in this case 7) by zero it is equal to infinity if you are trying to clear y that way
so you can put no solution and to explain why this is you can say that y=infinity

i was taught that you cant divide by zero...
hmm what about if i say the liek has no slope?

grade 10 academic(university) math lol

hmmmm.... err well not really cause to start out it wouldn't have a slope in the first place even if y=7 and even if it was 0y=x+7 you're still dividing (x+7) by zero so it still turns to infinity
your best bet is that the answer is infinity (and yes dividing any number by zero =infinity

)
maybe you can impress your teacher for some extra credit

hmm okay
so basically tho, this is a line...and on the line you can graph inifity points therefore giving yu infinity solutions?

no keep it simple, just answer it as no solution because 7/0 gives no solution. There is no line

yeah what Jstar1 said, there wouldn't be anything to graph so just write it next to the graph i guess
good luck on your test

see look...one of you says its infinity and the other says its none

well what he meant is that since there is no way to graph infinity there wouldnt really be a graph
but the answer is infinity (trust me; unless the problem isnt 0y=7

)

0y=7 =/= y=infinity
0y=7 => 0=7 <--- illogical
It may simply be "nothing"y=7 ie y=7 =>
a straight horizontal line with 7 intercept on y axis.

that would be if it was 1y=7 (i dont think it was coincidence that the problem had a zero in front of y unless the problem was different)

okay so i combine these 2 and i finally got it...
the y intercept is 7
there is no slop
so its just a straight horizontal line
therefore giving you infinety solutions
am i right this time

no its just infinity cause if you have y=infinity how are you going to graph that? you cant. cause you couldnt just graph y=7 and make it go on for ever since it isnt y=7 its y=infinity
so just infinity

wtf is this stupid question? It's 1st grade class math.
0=7 or y=7/0 impossible, end of story.
If there is x: y=7/x , we use limit if x=0
when x->0+, lim y = lim 7/x = +infinity
when x->0-, lim y = lim 7/x = -infinity
x=0 doesnt exist because a number cant be both +infinity and -infinity

any value you plug in for Y will be multiplied by zero,and zero can never equal 7
look at it that way instead of trying to say 7/0 is undefined
