Sweeney Todd

Maybe i'm a bit late (i searched and saw no thread about this), but i just saw that movie.

I have to say it's great to see a new Johnny Depp/Tim Burton combo movie. However this is not one of their best. The bloodbath is a bit too much for my taste but i love how Burton manages to give a reason for all of it.

The characters are the best part (especially Mrs. Lovett), a simple and unoriginal story but it's all about the personalities of the people involved. I really enjoyed watching it, even when i liked the style of the songs in Nightmare Before Christmas more.

If you haven't seen it, give it a shot, it's a very entertaining movie, unless of course you don't like opera kind of singing, which is used often here.

If you have seen it, what do you think about it? :)

I absolutely loved it. :] The musical part, that is.
I found the music very tastefully done. Normally, I don't like musicals. In fact, I didn't even know that Sweeney Todd was a musical until they started singing at the beginning. I thought they would stop, but they didn't.
But I found it very enjoyable. I just loved listening to them sing. It was really good.

But like you said, I could've done without some of the extreme bloodshed. In reality, there wasn't that much blood compared to some of the other movies I've seen. But it's the entire slitting throats thing. There's just something wrong with slitting throats to me, if you know what I mean. It's just not the same as getting stabbed or getting shot or getting your fingers chopped off.

Only thing I wish I could've seen was what happened to the girl (Georgiana?) and the apprentice (I forgot his name). I wanted a happy ending. :[

Overall, great movie. 8/10 as a movie from me - definitely recommended.

Agree with both of you except the gore. I like me some violence...not real of course.

They were Jhoanna and Anthony (i think), and i'd like to know what happened with them too.

I don't mind throat-slitting that much (i think the sudden shot of blood is what you find awkward, and maybe the sound it makes when they are struggling to breathe), it's the massive amounts of blood that go out through a so small cut. After a while it was exaggerated, but, as i said, Burton has a wonderful way to justify those scenes.

I know there had to be violence (it's about a murderer after all), but there was a point when i thought "there's a bit too much" (it could have been done with less throat slit in the middle, when he's singing after he and Mrs. Lovett plan their business together).

Most of the songs are pretty much alike, and, even when the music and singers were great it made it a little bit boring (though i love the darkish and bleak tone of photography of the movie, and it kept my attention the whole time).

Yah, Joanna & Anthony. I just didn't know how to spell Joanna. :d
Well, it wasn't so much the blood, really. It's just the throat-slitting. To me, it feels like... there's just something different about slit throats than anything other form of murder to me. That's the last way I would want to die.

Not that the blood spurting out everywhere doesn't affect that. Just makes it worse.

But in all honesty, Sweeney Todd just wouldn't have been Sweeney Todd without him running around killing everybody and turning them into meat pies.

And getting covered by blood hehe

Yeah, the most disturbing part about that way of killing (to me at least) is the gulping sound, that bubble-making sound they do when trying to breathe. And i only said the amount of blood because it was too much for that kind of cut.

Oh, stop you two babies.
The best thing I liked was the cinematography. Very good especially in the first song.

My favorite song from the whole movie. I though the gore was over the top but thats a part of the play so its necessary, it just made me uncomfortable because i tend to picture myself whenever he was cutting a throat, im sure alot of ppl do that. The characters were all nice and the singing was surprising well and the arrangements of the music made it quite pleasant some of the best music i've heard in a musical b4......but im a sucker for horns....

My other favorite was "The Worst Pies in London"

I wish they'd done "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" the lyrical arrangement is so nice but burton cut it

I'll survey the level of gore and see if it makes up for the musical side of the movie. Dude sings to his razors.

Awesome, awesome musical. Best musical I've ever seen, right after Moulin Rouge, that is.
I did hate however how those stupid insects and monkeys in the theater laughed at any tiny bit of humor, it isn't for you to laugh like a freak, period. Oh so many ignorant people there, they didn't like the "sad ending" and the movie "could of been better with a happy one", give me a fking break, don't they know who Tim Burton is?
Whatever happend to Jhoanna and Anthony is for the watcher to imagine.
I enjoyed it when Johnny made a reference to Scissorhands with the "At last my arm is complete again!" and how good the dark and full of sorrow parts suit Helena Bonham Carter so well, too much like Fight Club though.

Overall a great movie, I think there was some sobbing involved as well, not many movies have done that to me

What i didn't like about the ending is who killed Mr. T. I just didn't like that kid and i was like "What? Him?..." but yeah... it had to be done.

"I'll protect you forever" he said to Mrs Lovett, remember? And he did.
Todd knew he was behind him, and realized he had no reason to be alive anymore, so he decided to make it easy for the lad and let him kill him.

I knew the beggar was his wife from the beggining, because no secondary character had part in any song, but she had a song of her own.

Well i said i didn't liked it not that it didn't make sense  Of course it fits perfectly, but there's somehting about that character that i didn't like. I was like "he deserved to be killed by someone else", but then again there was no one else left
