There is an ancient legend that tells the story of the Jade Emperor who once invited every animal. The first 12 to arrive, would be selected as the 12 lucky animals for the Chinese Zodiac.

At that time the cat and the mouse (Rat) were good friends. When they heard about the race, the cat said to the mouse that they should be there early, but he also told the mouse he had problems with waking up early. The mouse promised to wake the cat so they could go together. However, the next morning, the mouse was so excited he forgot to wake the cat, and he started the race without him. While on his way, he encountered many animals that could run much faster than he could, so he came up with a smart idea. He talked the Ox to carry him, and in exchange the mouse would sing for him.

The Ox and the mouse arrived first. The ox was very pleased, thinking he would be the first sign of the years, but the mouse had already thought of that, and right before the finish he made sure he crossed the finish as the first, and thus became the first lucky animal of the Chinese Zodiac.

When the cat finally arrived, the selections were over and the 12 Zodiac Animals were already selected. That's why the other Zodiac animals appear behind the smallest of animals, and why the cat hate the mouse so much he'll always try to kill it.
