700 mb picture!!! taken by Hubble Space Telescope!
The sharpest image ever taken of the large "grand design" spiral galaxy M81 was released 9. June 2007 at the American Astronomical Society Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
A spiral-shaped system of stars, dust, and gas clouds, the galaxy's arms wind all the way down into the nucleus. Though the galaxy is located 11.6 million light-years away, the Hubble Space Telescope's view is so sharp that it can resolve individual stars, along with open star clusters, globular star clusters, and even glowing regions of fluorescent gas. The Hubble data was taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys in 2004 through 2006. This colour composite was assembled from images taken in blue, visible, and infrared light.

Very cool to have in "fit on screen" and zoom in with.
At first I set it to 100% scale - I thought it was taking forever to load because it was a blank white screen, but I was zoomed in on the centre of the image XD

any astrology experts wanna tell me how they got this image?
i mean, if the earth is in the middle of all that mumbo jumbo, how did we get a picture looking down on us? lol
is like space time and light just not continued and eventually the light just bends and so we can see down onto our own galaxy and determine our position in there?

actually, that's isn't our galaxy, it's the "grand design" spiral galaxy M81 11.6 million light years away.

Ok here we go
First its not our galaxy...its another galaxy
, its the large "grand design"
spiral galaxy M81
Secondly were not even in the middle of our own galaxy....were actually on the edge
of it, right on the very edge were there are very few stars indeed...if we were
in the middle then the night sky would always be full of stars all the time.
Thirdly light moves at a consent speed, the only thing that can affect it is a black
hole, apart from that time is continual and linear.

i found out the answer to my question.
thanks to everyone for replying.
the milky way pics always confused me cuz theyd always have an arrow pointing saying 'HERE IS EARTH' or somethin like that. I thought those were actual pictures, but theyre just detailed drawings. Well that kinda bursts my bubble.

Waste of bandwidth, and the image isn't the correct ratio.
Photoshop had no problems though, only took up a full GB of RAM.

Here's a groovy YTMND to put things into perspective:
http://atinyglimpse.ytmnd.com/I think the next servicing mission in August will make the Hubble 60%
more powerful than it was when this picture was taken.
The resized image doesn't really do it justice. Here's a cutout:
