Build Me a Computer :)

edit: HI EVERYBODY =]
Guys I'm planning on getting a new computer... I was wondering what kind of computer specs I should get since I know nothing about computers xD
I only know the basics like RAM.. and.. thats it lol
My budget is around $550~ (it can go a little higher)
-I want to be able to run SRO on medium or high SMOOTHLY. So I suppose a 3GB RAM or higher should do?
-I also need help on the processor and graphics card cus I dunno anything about it. What's some good affordable ones for me? I heard Intel is good for processor. And for graphics card.. ATI or GeForce.. dunno which is better.
Thanks a lot. Sorry if I posted on the wrong section :p

For what he's looking at he can chop down to a 8600gt, save 200+ dollars, and 2 gb ram is fine. I run on pentium 4, 1gb ram, 8600gt and Sro runs fine, got another GB ram and I never notice the memory leak =)

isn't the 8800 alot more than what his budget said...550 max for everything...the 8800 alone costs more than half doesn't it? ( i barely know anything about this...correct me if im wrong tho

PSU = Power Supply
CPU = Central Processing Unit
MB or Mobo = Mother Board.
SLI it has something to do with using 2 video cards for better visual performance, I don't know what it stands for, but don't worry about it.
Get the ultra X-Conenct power supply from tiger direct, it runs great, big fan, and the cables look good once you pound them into place.
For smooth graphics on high settings in SRO you might need a pretty expensive card, but if you got like 3GB of ram it will probably work out fine with a 256GB GeForce.
Seriously though, you can't get an ass-kciking comp for very cheap, but I suggest AMD chipset instead of intel, they run better and they are cheaper. With that said, if we are just talking about case, no accessories:
Case Clean and cheap. Looks Decent, not ultimate gamer style, but decent.($40)
Motherboard & CPU Bundle Seriously cheap for the performance, and comes with integrated Video for backup.($200)
Power Supply Not SLI or SATA ready, but let's face it, you don't even know what that means. ($40)
Ram 4GB of ram for $75 Trust me, you want this, especially for SRO.
Hard Drive 200GB is more than enough, especially with everything going streaming nowadays.($75)
Graphics Not the best, but it's a GeForce8500 with 512MB RAM, it's a good deal. ($80)
Subtotal: $510 after rebates, before tax.
Liquid cooling would be preferred, but unless you can cough up another $160 for it (total $670), you will need a few cooling products.
CPU Fan Will need to get yourself silver cooling gel if you are assembling yourself, another $10. ($30fan, $10 gel)
Memory Heat Dissipators $3.50, more than the Aluminum ones, but silver dissipates heat better. and 2gb sticks need it.
Cough up another $25 for
THIS burner. It's a good deal.
Total:
$578.50, before tax. no assembly, no mouse/kybd/screen or any other non-essential extras.
EDIT: I guess you can get an ass-kicking comp for that cheap...since that one is 2x better than my own and I run SRO fine...on low settings.

I know... cost me $1000cdn to make my comp 3 years ago. And it had 236 ATI Radeon9250, 1gb, 3GHz Intel...but back then 3.4Ghz was like top notch, so my comp was kick ass back then. Should not have had it assembeled by the guys at the store though, I can reassemble my comp pretty easily...the hardest part is hooking up the box's cables lol...
I should just make that comp for myself, it's godly. And with $250 more, you can get dual GeForce 8500, and SLI PSU, and liquid cooling and make it even godlier.

Don't forget about the OS. Silkroad doesn't like Vista much.

if you wanna keep the computer for long run..go with quad processor and 3gb ram ^^

Useless to go with a quad IMO. I've read that they won't keep going double with the processors, so in 5 years they are just going to spit out 32 and 64 core processors or something. (When i read that it said something about 2010 being the planned release, but I doubt they will be cheap enough until a few years later.
Plus, in 5 years, I would rather buy a new comp, with all new shiny parts, than keep upgrading old comp, since we all know how fast they change stuff. After all, DDR3..and DDR2 came out like 4 years ago. Quad, with duo coming out 1 year apart...etc etc. In 3 years, a quad will be like the minimum they sell, I can see it happen.

lol @ PSU without SATA cables, but selecting a SATA HD.
And that 8500 is trash, you'd be better off with a 7900. And that CPU fan won't fit socket AM2.
Processor's good though, and you can't beat that ram's price. I paid like 4x that a couple years ago for just 2gb.
