That's absolutely disgusting. He was probably making the rest of the Coast Guard look bad or something, so they sacked him. Either way, I highly doubt that his rescuing the girl was the real cause of his being fired. He made the coast guard look good - they could've used it as a publicity stunt. So why fire him?

Cut the liability, it's how the corporate world works. If he did it again and failed to save the girl a lawsuit against improper use of equipment and unlawful disregard of safety procedures would've found its way to the agency doors costing them possibly in the millions. Pity that's how the U.S. is now.

I would have to agree on this one, but At the end of the day, even if the guy got killed doing so, he is saving a young girl's life. If sucks that people these days are so critical that they no longer realize the fundamental human values but dwell on policies and laws.
