Depression

Post by Rainigul »

Hey, I just saw a commercial about depression, and I don't understand. How do you become clinically depressed? Notice how I said clinically, I've heard that there is a condition that just makes you sad. How does that happen? And if this does happen, why doesn't the person just eat alot of fruits, vegetables, no meat, and fish (ESPECIALLY salmon. Cooked, for the oils). Then run alot. That would make the person naturally happy, for the endorphyns (however you spell that), and that diet automatically makes you happy.
Maybe I'm just ignorant, but the whole point of this thread is to find out how it happens, why it happens, and how it works.
Thanks.

i read about this in like chapter 6 of my Psych book called: Different states of consciousness, in the drugs section. BRB

ok so there is a difference between depression [when you're feeling a little down, and eventually you'll get over it: e.g. redneck's dad] and depression :

Major Depressive Disorder:
occurs when signs of depression last two weeks or more and are not caused by drugs or a medical condition

hmm you want to know what causes it though :/ i think we need Slyhana, M.D. :D
hope you don't mind wikis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_depression [ i really don't feel like typing several pages on depression :)]

imo most of the time when a doctor diagnoses you with depression its bullshit. They give you some medication to take and you feel even worse. They make you think your depressed when your actually not.

My father was diagnosed with depression 3 years ago. Doctor gave him some pills to take and he took them for 1-2 months...It didn't help. He couldn't get any sleep, had breathing problems and in the end suffered a minor stroke. Once he stopped taking the medication and realized his "depression" was bullshit, well, he lost weight, started swimming again, and is healthier then ever before.

That's what I thought. Just like ADD, that's bullshit. ADHD though, some kids have it... But it's being overdiagnosed.
You just needa slap them and tell them to shut up :)

lol ADD isnt bullshit, it sucks to have. and to redneck mostly they ask questions if he answered wrong its his fault...cause they always ask how long its been and such. Everyone gets depressed, some cant control it and it is clinical caused by imbalances. But the ignorant people always say you can control it...morons.

I said some people have ADHD, there is no such thing as ADD though.
Some kids who I've been told are the worst cases of ADD are just bullshitting themselves. They say they can't focus on schoolwork because of their "disorder", and then they go sit down and play videogames for 8 hours straight.
If ADD existed, the person would go crazy because they've run out of things to do in a week.

I agree with redneck.

They're both mental states, not sicknesses or diseases.

I "have" autism, and really, it isn't something I can't control.

What's with the double negative?
Also, I think it's possible to have a clinical depression, but it has something to do with your cells or something. I also figure you can "fix" it.

I guess if you're really keen about learning more on depression and other psychiatric disorders in general, there are alot of articles out there on the web. Just make sure its for a credible source (academic institutions etc).

Depression can be a normal state, we all get depressed when something upsets us. Its a normal situation. Sometimes, due to a number of things, be it organic or genetic, a person might become disproportionately depressed against whatever the trigger was, and more importantly if the depression affects the person's capacity to function. Thats when intervention should be in order. Now, I'm not a proponent on psychiatric drugs, but they do work and have changed lives for alot of people who benefit from it, but it isnt always the first choice of intervention for everyone. There are other non pharmaceutical ways to help treat depression, and those options should be exhausted first before putting someone on lifelong medication.

I thought ADD and ADHD referred to the same thing oO. It has been overdiagnosed, and the criteria for diagnosis keeps changing too. It does exist, and it is real, but its hard to diagnose, and at such a young age its tricky when you want to start to place a label on anyone (so most psychiatrist would want to avoid any psych diagnosis in children). Autism is different, there is a spectrum of severity. Both can have an organic basis. I wouldnt say it is a disease, but it can be a disorder, especially when you see the really severe end of the spectrum which can be very disabling.
