Well the five that have in fact shaped and changed the world more then
any other leading to other more involved inventions are the following. Chosen
on how they truly have changed the world around us
1=Microchip (1959)
2=Steam engine (100 or 1629)
3=Bicycle (1818)
4=Penicillin (1928 or 1897)
5=papyrus/paper (3500BC)
Where i have two dates is because the inventions are invented, but then
lost/rediscovered or not acknowledged by the scientific community.

3 things wrong with that suggestion
1. electricity might have it beaten as a discovery because everything uses it
2. its a discovery and hes lookin for inventions
3. it was discovered in prehistoric times and if you bothered to read you'd know that hes looking for recent things
personally i cant think of anything better than these 3 for recent inventions, but i dont know what my other 2 on the list would be
internet
computer
cell phone

So many inventions in the modern era. Well just throwing some ideas:
1. Cornflakes 1906
2. Credit card (Diners club) 1950
3. Oral contraceptives 1954
4. HIV protease inhibitor 1994
5. Viagra 1998
inventions change lives, but the ones that open up radical possiblities and single handedly shape our world are probably worth writing about (c.f internet etc).

3) Penicillin
4) Car
5) Gun (wars are inevitable, without guns we'd still be having the death tolls that they had in the Crusades and in roman times)
Or, if you wanna have a laugh:
1) Absinthe
2) Pornography
3) The Eye-patch, yarrrrr
4) Highlighter-pens
5) Those little umbrellas you get in cocktail drinks.

are you kidding? we got enough weapons to massacre the people on this planet in less than 10 min
guns cause more deaths and your just making wrong assupmtions because we haven't had a major world conflict yet
