okay sorry for the gay text, but I know that caught your eye :p

I just installed a brand new OS for my PS3, called Yellow Dog Linux

This OS allows you to use your PS3 like a Linux computer, which includes some neat programs. As you can see from the list, there is firefox for browing, Gaim for IM chat or IRC (which ever you prefer), GIMP for photo editing and a bunch of programming tools.

BTW, i'm on the ps3 now typing this.

All you need is a USB keyboard/mouse and a TV with 720 resolution or higher.

Or.. You can just use a computer -.-

what are the ps3 specs? if they are better than a regular computer, why not buy a ps3? =P

you can buy a pretty good HP desktop for $399 USD....still cheaper than a PS3 i hope that not the only use your getting out of your gaming console...

Yeah a 400 dollar computer isn't a super computer that can handle intense games lol.

If I recall correctly, Stanford used people's PS3's when they were not being used which sped up their research by 3-5 times because of the power the PS3's had.

You could buy a regular computer, which I have, but this way I get a Blu-Ray player, a consol that plays games, and a computer all for like less than 600.

Regular Cost for that=
1) blue ray player: about 400 bucks
2) good computer with good gfx card: around 800-1000
3) consol that plays game: 250

total: in ths mid $1000's.

Avalanche, that seems pretty cool...just dont go overload with downloading stuff to your ps3, you can brick it if you use untrusted software or applications...

40gb is around the same, 80gb is a bill extra, but your still saving taking what avalanche said into account...

Yeah I did some research before hand, installing a linux OS doesn't void the warrenty, and I don't plan to add anything else really. I added a external HD for extra space as well.

its becasue of the way its Built it can run those kinda games

Did i say anything about games? I know its built to play games, thats the point. Its built to play games, not to be a pc. The only people who work on mods like this for consoles are people who ae just trying to show off that they can do it, it has no real use and is not very practical.
