Time Travel

I'm currently working on physics studies, and got bored, so now I'm going to impose physics on you guys.
First, do you believe time travel is possible? Either forward or back?
Would you travel into the future if we have the means?
Physicists claim to know HOW to travel into the future, do you?
The first and third questions are quite simple, although I'm sure some of the younger ones might have trouble. I'm just curious as to what other people think about it.
Physics is boring, so i figured time travel was about the best thing, unless someone wants to talk about quantum mechanics, relativity and string theory...in which case, go that way ---> (keep going)
Hmm, one more thing. Is it possible to travel through solid objects such as a wall or door?
*edit*
ok, we all know time is "man made" but common, you SHOULD know what i mean by time travel. Can you keep your current form, and exist in the world next week, or even 100+ years from now, in the form you are in now.

AFAIK nothing can travel at lightspeed but light itself. Since time is a man-made thing you really can't go back and forth through it.
But technically you can already time-travel by flying cross-country and over timezones.

granted, time is artificial, developed by our minds to explain things we can not otherwise explain, however by time travel, i mean, can you preserve your current form while the rest of the universe continues on. AKA, you are "frozen"

its unknown if hte law of physics allow time travel.
the theory is some strange or unique motion in the space-time continuum will allow time traveling.
the word traveling is incorrect coz its changing spatial position from a fixed point.
theres an arguement that is there really a past or future? is it tangible?
but with a flux capacitor. everything is possible!!

the concept of time isn't man made. there is a past, present, and future. clocks, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, years etc. are man made. time doesn't stand still when the clock breaks.

Can we move past the concept of time? Time in itself is a huge discussion, but can you keep your current form, and exist in the world next week, or even 100+ years from now, in the form you are in now. Thats what time travel is being defined as here.

And have you guys seen the movie "Watch Stoppers" ? In the movie, the guy was in the room that accellerated the molecules in your body and then he used his watch that makes time kinda stop, and his molecules were moving so fast that he walked through the solid metal door.
Idk
worm holes r curvatures of spacetime.
heres a good article if u r very interested in time traveling

it explains the concepts very well with great description adn ez to understand.

read "the Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene and you'll figure out that its most likely impossible because you would not be able to travel back past the time you traveled back, which would be the present, and you would have to be traveling faster than the speed for time to turn back anyway. My theory on forward movement in time is that its already happening, but if we want to go any faster we have to travel at a negative speed which is impossible until proven possible. Time and space are like partners, the faster you travel the slower time moves and the slower you travel the faster time moves. this was proven by scientist by taking two precisely synchronized watches and putting one in a fast moving aircraft, leaving the other one on the ground. The clock that was on the aircraft was 1 billionth of a second behind after a while of fast movement. My personal opinion is time travel cannot be disproved, it can only be proven, the same way creationism or evolution can't be disproved or proven (they could be proven by utilizing time travel to look into the past but that hasn't been created yet).
Another thing about time travel is if sometime in the future they do create it and are able to travel in the past why haven't we seen any time travelers?

yep. both creation and evolution cant be proved coz no testible evidence

Ok moving past the concept of time which in reality doesn't exist well the concept does but not time itself. I think it would be possible to travel forward. Backward as well but only under the circumstance that you were traveling backward without the intent to do something because if you carry out your plans in the past it leads into a paradox.
While im sure its possible on technical terms i don't know that would be accomplished i don't know all the physics necessary because physics involves math which makes my head hurt @_@. However in regards to your poll i voted forward only because unless you accidentally traveled through time you are traveling backward with a purpose and if that purpose is achieved you create a paradox even if that purpose is simply to view the past.

There will never be such a thing as time travel. How do I know? Because people havn't met any time travelers yet. Think about it. If people could time travel we would have met them by now.

If there was no sun or moon relative to earth, what would we have? Time is just a name we gave to the orbit our planet makes around the sun. And we happen to base hours, minutes, weeks, whatever, on that orbit.

taking it a set further time is only a unit of measurement. The concept of time , all things in the past, all the thing in the present, and all things that will ever exist as running in chronological order is a man made concept cause by our inability to perceive all "time" at once which is how it actually exist. i dunno if thats what reise believes but im just expanding the the idea of time as a man made concept...

well, most studies into time travel include worm holes, or short cuts through the space time continuum. As of now, there is no evidence these exist. And, while theoretically possible (on paper) we haven't seen any. Also, trying to get one to sustain itself long enough in order to travel through it is another problem. Still another problem is devising some sort of device that will withstand the journey through the worm hole....
Also, if you think of using light speed, or something faster than the speed of light, stop, because you can't. For one, and this is pretty cool...the closer you approach the speed of light, the more your mass increases...eventually becoming infinite....
Also interesting is the fact that protons (particles of light) do not age....so, protons emmitted by a star 10 billion years ago that reach your eye or whatever today are just as old as they were 10 billion years ago....it's a rather complicated thing to explain, I'll try tomorrow, but right now, I'm tired as hell....

er, i didn't make myself clear, time is also a creation of man. what i meant was, without all these indicators of times, we would still live on. life continues whether or not time does. so, there would still be a past, present, and future.

So many people saying it is not possible.
Well, the answer thus far is YES, forward only (as we have figured out) Traveling into the past is not possible with the current knowledge of physcis. But who knows, some day.
Anyways, most people seem to be talking about worm holes and moving through the fabric of space, when actually it is much simpler. The universe is composed of many dimensions, and here we are concerned with 4 of them. You have your standard X,Y,Z axis, of which most lifeforms can comprehend from the start of their existance. Now, the fourth dimension to deal with is time. Yes, time is a dimension of space. Assuming most poeople have or are undergoing a high school education, I will direct you to a very basic concept of components. If you move at 5mph north east, then it makes sense that you move north and east at the same time. You move X mph east and Y mph North, depending on the degree you move "north of east" or "east of north". In any case, both your north and east component, when put into a triangle, will have a resultant of 5mph. hence your movement of 5mph north east.
The same concept is applied to time and the X Y Z directions. If you move so great in these 3 dimensional direction, time will virtually be at a stand still.
If you move at 5mph due east, you have no movement north, right? The same thing applies to time. light speed is the maximum possible speed obtainable by ANYTHING in the universe. Nothing can exceed the speed of light, not even the force of gravity, as assumed by some physicists earlier.
moving at such a high speed, the world will seem to be at a standstill based on perspective, even though you are moving at an unfathomable rate, to yourself you are perfectly normal, and the world seems to be moving slowly.
So, through the movement equal or near the speed of light, you are able to preserve your current state because you will not experience any passing of time. When you stop moving at such a high speed, you will be in the "future" so to speak.
Of course, the problems comes with the fact that the faster you move, the more energy is required to speed you up. So great infact that as you come within reach of light speed, the force needed is near infinite. It is technically impossible to achieve light speed, but the closer you approach it, the less time you experience, and the more you "travel into the future".
This has been tested and proven in laboratories where they accelerated molecules and they decayed much slower than normal.
Before someone says anything about it, no you will not experience less time if you constantly move all your life, because any conventional means of moving on earth is so small, it is considered to a velocity of zero compared with the universe, and therefore, even flying in a jet around the world, your speed will not change or come any closer to that of light. You will in fact move just as fast as you are now, sitting in our chair.
Another thing to be mentioned, is to say that the tested molecule above could read 5 books before it decayed. After being accelerated, it will live much longer in the concept of time, but when it decays, it will still only read 5 books.
There will never be such a thing as time travel. How do I know? Because people havn't met any time travelers yet. Think about it. If people could time travel we would have met them by now.
Thats because it is impossible to re-experience things that have already happened. You can only "freeze" yourself in time so that you experience the future in your current form, not the past.

time is a load of crap, it dosnt even pass at the same speed in all conditions
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hafele-Keating_experiment
because of this, if we could move fast enough it would be possible to go forwards in time. It wouldnt be possible to go back in time but it could be possible to stay in the past while everyone else continues on into the future
