like the name sais, why do we use 1337???

I cant keep count of how many times this is asked on every forum i go to

1337 = leet = elite = someone who is really good at something

leet is supposed to be pronounced elite but it rarly is this days.

we use it to mock n00b0rz who use it or to look like 1337 d00dz ourselves.

People use 1337 for the same reason you type "sais" instead of "says" - lack of IQ.

I use sais but I don't lack IQ oO my English just isn't perfect. I'm finished with school now for more than 2 years and it just kinda 'sneaked in' to type it that way.

1337 on the other hand is childish 'pwnz0rs' stuff imo.

The only time that I ever recall wishing to strike a woman was when I overheard one of their kind use "pown". I kindly corrected her by stating that the correct pronunciation is "own", but she argued otherwise. Then I stated that even if it was an acceptable word, then it should be spelled "pwn", for the sake of keeping the word in it's original context...but she didn't listen, and called me a "n00b".

"#337 $p34|{" - ("leet" speak) was tolerable, at least to me, when it stayed confined to places like Halo2, or online Forums...but seriously, I believe it's getting out of hand... -_-lll

It was first used by members in BBS in the early 80', it was a member rank just as "elite member" here in SRF. Having that rank allowed one to access to certain chat rooms, games, file folders (usually containing porn and pirated stuff). People started to self-call themselves as leet and later on as 1337.
