i am planning on upgrading my desktop into a gaming pc

i want to upgrade these areas:

-CPU - Amd athlon xp 2700+

-Motherboard - some old gigabyte mb

-Ram - 768 corsair ram

-Graphics card - Geforce 4 440

-Hard drive - 40gb


what should i upgrade to for areas?

You will need to upgrade everything as your mobo doesn't support new technology (pci-e/ddr2(or 3)). And, with a new mobo you need a new processor.

You will need to buy everything new, except maybe the harddrive; and you can recycle your CD drives, Floppy drives, case, PSU (possibly).

We can't build your computer for you, especially without knowing your price range.

You will have to decide if you want to go Athlon or Pentium, find a motherboard with the right socket, a GFX card in your price range, and decide how much $ per ram stick you're willing to splurge on.


All we can do is tell you what is better out of two components, and even then, you should be able to do that from reviews.

well i don't kno much bout computers and how they works thats y im asking for advice/suggestions here, im not really asking you to decide build my pc for me..... not sure bout price range but just need an upgrade that will allow me to play latest games without hustle.

No offense, but thats an old pc!!! I don't know your budget, but I say just replace everythingm the best for now and the cheapest I know

^ i wouldnt spend 200 on a hdd and cheap out on mobo or ram.

i would get a smaller hdd quality brand name ram,and a 4200+x2

DDR2 is going for $50 these days.

Then I'd go C2D, E4400's are relatively cheap, work well and overclock well. No dead end like socket 939. (Not saying that socket AM2 is a dead end, mind you)

The rest requires research but I'd think a single 320gig drive might be ok depending on what you use your PC for. I use two 250 gig drives and run out of space because of all my games and the DVD encoding I do.

Vid card depends on what you do and how much you game; the monitor you have will impact what card too. If you're running 800 by 600 on a 15" CRT and playing Solitaire you don't need an 8800GTX. (yes, that's an extreme example)

Faster drives like Raptors help too, as well as good DDR2 RAM. Too many factors without the price range first.
