Well, are you a drop out? Not because you're just lazy and you didn't like school, but for any other reason.

I dropped out school a few years ago because I certainly don't think school is going to help me a lot, I mean all those things they teach you (at least here) you can easily learn them reading books, even maths which was pretty hard for me. When it comes to opportunities school (in my case) is also useless, since my father has been an antiques salesman for over 35 years and he had to drop out of school (dictatorship), same with all my father's friends that do the same. I'm turning 19 in a few days and in March I will attend to the art-nouveau and abstract painting academy, and I'll take jewelry lessons, giving me the knowledge my father gathered in those 35 years, opening more and more doors everyday.
Currently I have barely any knowledge in antiques except for soccer world cup history, which is a fair good business in eBay giving me a monthly income of 2000 to 3500 US$. That is pretty good considering I live with my father and sister and all I have to pay for is my internet, clothes and english/videogame programming lessons.

Im a straight A student.. Dont really work hard, just pretty lucky i guess.. School is pretty fun anyway. Its like daycamp. xD

Everyone has their own path in life. I kind of admire Malcolm X and how he made his "homemade education". He must have read dozens of books in prison.

being a doctor or an astronaut aren't the only fulfilling jobs

for example
working construction can be very fulfilling and a very happy life for some people.

not that i work construction, i just know people who find working with their hand fulfilling.

i prefer not to follow the path millions of other have before me..life is too short for that.

most people go to school and "work hard" at it as if their life depends on it simply because their parents/guardian raised them to believe thats what life is all about, as they will do to their children in the future.

in short, i didn't finish school

I wouldn't be able to drop out; just having people know that would be unbearable for me. Reputation is very important, I rather study hard and at the very least graduate with a ba before ending my education. I plan to get my JD, and the only reason is for the prestige.

As Firemouse life is too short, and most of the knowledge you get at school you can get it by your own if you really want to.


I don't work with my hands ("hard work" as you call it) and I'm a drop-out, yet a lot of my friends that are to be in uni next year are either ignorants or they hardly remember anything they learned in previous years.

For example, my best friend: She wants to be a lawyer just like her mom (who happens to be the most important person in her working area), and it's 6-8 years of uni. In 2009 she will work with her mom as assistant, to gain some experience and practical knowledge, they pay is 180~ US$ a month and that's fine with her because she's doing for the reasons above. But my sister who is 28 years old and a lawyer is 500-600 US$ a month. Now compare that with my income, and wait 10 years until I gain all the experience I need.

I don't know where you live, but here school is overrated

Yeah, I'm a dropout and I currently work 32 hours a week. I even have a shirt which says "85% High-School Dropout". Nearly all of the people around me(except for my close friends) say I'm stupid.

in the us, school is overrated. u pass high school to get into a good college, and u go to college for the diploma, not education. u can gain all the skills u need when u start working. where u got the diploma is also important if u want a head start in life.

Well seems U.S.A is different as usual but.

Schooling > Working.

In 10 years from now when I'm done with everything IT management has to offer me, I'll look back at all the diploma's and certificates I have achieved.

I rather do that than working a 40 hour per week job, for the knowledge I can work a 3rd of that for double the pay.

imo school is the easiest way to become successful

but, if you already generate a good income and have nothing else planned for your life, I think its not a bad idea to manage an antique shop

depends on what you want to do. In the US i know alot of ppl who are going to college to go through the motions cause having the diploma means more pay. But you can't gain the skillz to do heart surgery, advanced chemistry, or robotic engineering as soon as you start working...the ppl who you expect to hire you will expect you to be able to do them b4 you get there....

in my school all the asians want to be either doctor or lawyer

its so lame how these jobs are overrated just because you get a lot of money

College dropout

Anyone who says college is overrated obviously hasn't truly struggled on their own for very long... if at all. Without education you are very confined to what you can do. I went down the same path a lot of you are just beginning to take. I dropped out of high school. Lived on my own for 4 years. And now I'm exactly where I would have been if I had graduated, except now I'm 4 years behind. I started college at the age of 22 instead of 18.

I'm not saying college is for everyone. It's not. But being able to buy things you want and being able to live comfortably without worrying about stupid things like bills and insurance usually requires a good paying job.

If you ask me, I don't wanna live paycheck to paycheck. Sure, I'm having success now. But it's only considered success because I'm still young. If I get paid this much when I'm 35 years old, I will not be happy at all.

Yeah, it's nice to get out in the world and work a little bit. Everyone should experience the real world before they go to college IMO. It really builds character and you become a more responsible person. After living on my own for a while, and only having a bag of Doritos to eat for an entire week, I decided that maybe college isn't so bad after-all.

Looking back, I wish I would've stayed in high-school and gotten my diploma. I had full scholarship offers from 4 different D1 schools as a student athlete. But because I made a stupid decision, it bit me in the ass and now I gotta pay my way. The decision is yours.... just remember, you can always get an education regardless of your age. If you choose not to, you will eventually suffer the consequences.

I dropped out early into my senior year of highschool, and got my GED, and am planning to go to a community college for two years /then state maybe. although I don't really need to go to school, i'm just going for the experience.
i've got to say though, the importance of college depends on what situation you're in. literally, the only reason you go to college is to get a higher end job then the average joe, and make more money. just because one went to college for 4+ years doesn't make him much better off than someone who dropped out of highschool as long as they are both making the same amount of money.. and it's quite possible to make money without a college degree.

f your an idiot or you don't care about how much money you make....even with construction it can take 25-30 years of work just the get to the same lvl of pay as a contraction guy with a diploma

not everyones goal in life is to be rich. for me, settling down in a small (i hate big houses) apartment, with a nice steady job is all i want, that IS success in my eyes.

firsthand account of whats gonna happen to you if you drop out of high school. Yes its true that you can succeed in life without a college degree, its just that its harder to be successful. But, it depends on the individual thought of what "success" is. Some is to get into a big corporation and get a lot of money. Others is just having a decent job and being able to generate decent income and live average in an easy way
