Van Halen and Black Sabbath are more rock. Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Metallica for example are metal.

They're not metal.

They're like... Old rock/classic rock.

Not really classic though.

[EDIT:]

TBH though, I have a different standard of metal than most. Slayer is definately not metal. Metallica and Iron maiden are hardly metal, though they just make the curve.

lol iron maiden, slayer, and metallica were around much before the 90s.

Black Sabbath IMO is more doom/classic rock (the doom I'm thinking of is off their paranoid record and the song electric funeral)

Well in the fact that those bands have become real mainstream nowadays i can agree with you. But those bands are metal, even if I think slayer is just an overrated thrash band. Also Iron Maiden has been one of my favorite bands since i first heard them over 4 years ago.

Just another persons opinion ofcourse

Also I saw this metal documentary 'Metal; a headbangers journey' and their research's conclusion was that black sabbath was the first band that could be called heavy metal

Slayer started thrash. There's no way you can't call them metal.

Black Sabbath is basically just old rock, sort of on the boundary between rock and metal.

And well Van Halen ... more like Hair Rock to me ...

Black sabbath is arguably the first ever metal band, they took rock into metal. Some people think deep purple were the original metal band though, as well as some other bands

Yes, i know they dont really sound much like metal but they were the first bands to show any sign of what metal became in them. Black sabbath dont consider themselves to be metal though, they think they are just rock (they actually got some of their inspiration from blues music) but without bands like them metal wouldnt be where it is today.
