It did when it was released. I haven't had any problems with it at all. Infact, I installed it on my desktop too.

I think the problem is that people are using bootleg copies, or don't know how to install it properly.

There's also hardware requirement. Any rig without 2gb of ram or more will not be able to handle vista + software (read: video games, media editing tools, etc.)

Well not "powerful". A decent one, yes. My guess would be:

True dual core processor,
Graphics Card with 256 dedicated memory, or ~500 shared,
2 GB ram

From what i've observed, from the people complaining about vista, the majority of them are people who know nothing about computers, a part of them are people who think they know something about computers, and a small portion of elitists that complain in the same way they complained about XP, ME, or 98. Of course, there are some extreme hardcore tweakers and overclockers that have valid reasons for not liking vista, but the majority is people who don't like it because their computer isn't good enough, or because it's what people told them.

that sounds powerful to me....having a 2GB ram minimum requirement its steep in my book....im running on 256MB

If you're running 256, you're most probably on DDR1. The prices dropped a lot recently because of DDR2 becoming standard, and the introduction of DDR3.

You could upgrade rather inexpensively.

I've never picked up a virus through mp3, and I only use it for hard-to-find artists.

TBH, I downloaded it yesterday morning to download patrick watson albums. I couldn't find them on pirate bay, and I haven't used other torrent sites. Just now, I tried mininova and found both his albums  *uninstalls linewire*
