When you're new to a university, you spend your days hours away from home with no one you know. It allows you to become a part of something; same reason why immigrants join gangs.

And, it's not bad. It's normal that stuff happens, bunch of 20 year old university students with a huge supply of alcohol.

Ever see Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle?

I know a bunch of asians that are in...well pretty much an asian only frat (since no other race exists in the frat lol) and at first, you think they are a bunch of good asians, good in school, respectful, etc. Then when you meet back at the house and theres a keg of beer on the table, you know somethings about to surprise you lol.

IMO Don't join a frat unless its Education First for them.

Advice: Leave your pocket protector at home when going to your initiation.

Getting drunk and high with a group of guys who act so close it's pretty much bordering on homosexuality should come after getting an education imo.

You pay for your classes and not a vat of alcohol right? Just my opinion though.

It gives you access to all kinds of connections that you wouldn't normally get. For example, I'm in Alpha Epsilon Delta and in it I associate with a bunch of med students, and the ones that I'm friends with recommends me to labs, or hospitals and such and helps me get internship and other things, makes pre-med a lot easier.

I'm a Delta Sigma Phi. Frats are not at all an essential part of college, you can get by without them, some people probably should. They're great ways to meet a lot of people and just to instantly make a large group of friends you'll have for many years to come. My GRANDFATHER still talks to his fraternity brothers from 60 years ago. For someone like me who's planning on a political life after school, it's another good way to get connections. I got my internship this summer because the head of the office has a son in my frat and I got some rather hard to attain face-to-face time because of that.

Fraternities also have their own league of sports which just adds to the enjoyment. I play baseball and Ultimate Frisbee for mine and it's unbelievably fun. I have a match tomorrow if you're truly so interested in the concept that you'd like some pictures.

The main idea behind initiations and such is to try and narrow it down to people who think in similar ways, and think about it, who are the people you usually like to befriend? People you have something in common with. Frats are just an instant way to have something in common with a large crowd of people and have someone else help filter out people you might better get along with.

Be very choosy in your frat and tour around though. Delta Sig at my college is a great frat with no hazing (hazing is the torture some frats give pledges until they become full members). The very same frat at other schools is a roofie colada frat... not something you want to be known for. Some frats are right out of bad 80s movies, some are almost devoted just to playing video games, some for different races/religions, and some, like mine, are more just a social club where initiation is really just to see if you'd get along with the guys.

Typical stuff for us are sports, cook-outs, Braves games, socials, open house for recruits for one week a semester, community service projects, and about four big parties a year.

Like everything else in life, there's good ones and bad ones. Do your research before you commit yourself and you can find one that makes you happy.

I guess basic summary, frats aren't just "Drink 'til You Die or Get Out", they can be a lot deeper. Ten of my brothers and I don't even drink, at all. Don't count on stereotypes to make your judgments from afar, get in there and take a look around.

The point of joining one is because it's basicly like a clique with alot of bonuses.

You are friends with one guy in a fraternity: You are friends with all of them, and you're like really popular now.

When I go to college I'll join a fraternity, but that's still a ways off.
