Money management sucks

The problem with having money is learning to not spend it everywhere you go.

Especially if you've got a nice tidy lump saved up, like a grand or more...or if you've just gotten paid...

Like right now, I really wanna order some breakfast rather than wait for the free lunch I can have at 11:30 when my co-worker shows up...I'm so hungry...but I've spent alot lately since I had Thurs and Fri off, along with lending my dad some dolla's...so I know I shouldn't.

Other examples...like when you're at the mall and you see all of these clothes stores and shoe stores and you keep seeing shit you wanna buy, especially shoes and jackets/sweatshirts in my case, it's so hard not to since I've got a bunch of money in the bank.

Or the simple fact of not buying too much weed just cos I can...I was in that pitfall for awhile and I spent a shit load haha.

Anyway, do any of you have trouble keeping your money saved up and not spent all over the place? :P

"The whiskey is fine, but the meat is rotten!"

(From a translator, when you put in "The mind is strong, but the flesh is weak" and translate it to Russian it becomes something like "The spirit is good, but the flesh is bad" then back to English it becomes "The whiskey(spirit) is fine, but the meat is rotten!)

Once I translated "Lashes to ashes, lust to dust" into German and online translator'd it into English again, and it came out as "Whips to the cinder, you crave to sneak a goal"

Anyway.

I'm a girl, and my first word was money. I'm not a good person to talk to about money management :P

LOL why would you make an angry face to that comment? You couldn't possibly be offended in any way by that... :?

Let me ask if any of you know how it is to have like a grand in the bank, some plastic in your wallet, and to be in the middle of a mall...but you don't want to spend much money?

Lame feeling hahaha. I can't wait to go on a shopping spree. I could drop a G on clothes no problem...

Some would suggest cataloging your spending habits its and such...but thats way to tedious...

So quick and easy:

You have flat bills for things...bills that rarely change...like apartment rent for example...then you have variable bills...like electric bills or gas bills...and average them over a 6-month period (take your last six bills to get your average and use that)

So you take the bills that don't change, for example, my monthly would be
$675 <---Rent
$10 <---DSL
$50 <---Phone
$25 <---Water
$25 <---Garbage
$40 <---Smokes
$50 <---Mass Transit
-----------------------
$875 a month

my variable would be
$150 <---Gasoline
$180 <---Electricity
$135 <---Groceries

------------------------
$465

$465
$875
------------------------
$1340 a month

Now with that out of the way...I'm fairly lazy...So I like to have as much free time as possible...I can make ~$1750 a month, so....

$1750
$1340
------------------------

$410

out of this I further remove an additional $100 dollars as a buffer..since we're averaging bills that are varible...having a buffer for flunctuations is good to have...

leaving me with $310...

Of that $310 I take away $150 and put it into my own personal savings/rainy day funds/emergency/etc...

So I have $160 left over to spend to my little hearts desire...

Eh ... I never understood how people have so many problems with money :O ... Maybe I have a little Scot in me and I try to spend as few money on things as I can, or only if necessary. Anyways, even if I have been kinda short on money, I always worked it out. It's about setting the right budgets for the right things.... sounds easy, but that's how it is imo.

I know people who go to discos/clubs every weekend and blast off 50€ easily an evening ... and that from their hard earned money ... if I want to drink that bad, I go to a private party or something ... or just don't at all o0

Just as an example on spending money on the wrong end...

Well its an example of how I do things...plus...once you gets these kinda things clarified...your mind can begin to do its work...upside is I owe no one any money...no credit cards bills...no debt...

And except for a pre-pay debit card with at most $50 bucks on it at any time...all my money is cash...I don't use banks or checks...I use money orders...

I make sure to never cloudy the line between needs and wants...I need to pay my bills...I don't need the $125 sneakers I saw in the mall the other day...

Additionally I buy things over a period of time..not lay-away..like it took me 16 months to buy me an XboX...every month I put $20 dollars into my "Xbox" envelope...or even games that come out or are gonna come out...I put back maybe $5-$10 dallors a month into an envelope with the title of the game I want...then when I meet the price I buy it...good things come with time...

It's not that I have a spending problem - or perhaps I do, but I keep it in line...I want to buy things and I have to fight myself to not buy things, and therein lies my complain lol.

$160 a month?

Ouch lol.

I spend more than you do on pleasantries. :P

Well I edited the previous post to put into light how I do things involving wants and such...I don't really do without neat things...but I don't rush out to get things without careful thought either...

Anyways I'll post the edited stuff here just for ease...

Throw 1/2 your free money (After necessary bills) into an IRA. You can't touch it, and a couple hundred a month compounding for like 50 years will be a hella big retirement fund :D

IRAs often depend on Market fluctuations, inflation, and how they are managed...in the end you may very well end up with actually less then what you put into it in the first place...but most the time you break even...

The house is paid for so no monthly rent, but there are school taxes and property taxes though :(

My new car is also fully paid off as well

Here are my monthly bills that I can remember (I know I have a lot more bills):

Cell phone - $90
Electricity - $300-350 (dont know why)
Gasoline - $160
Landline & DSL - $75
Water - $40
DirecTV - $100
Food/Dining/Restaurants/Buffet - $700
House Gas Bill - $30
Entertainment - $200
Clothing - $300

Annual home insurance/flood protection - $3000
6-month car insurance premium - $1900

Of course there are other bills that are other fees too like credit monitoring, home security system, magazine subscription fees, ventrilo server fee, netflix fee, blockbuster fee, haircuts, professional massages, and a lot more goodies which increase the quality of life.

Most of my money are spent on the all latest electronics.... I probably spend about $2000/month on all the latest "toys"... if people go to my room yall can probably stay in there forever :P

I don't keep a budget at all since for the most part my income is greater than my expenditures. Some of my friends call me an impulse buyer, but I'm really not. I don't see why a person should hoard all the money... you just enjoy life and you never know what will happen tomorrow.

And to the person that made the comment about putting all their money into their IRA... I see no logic in that. When you're old, there is a very limited amount of things you can do. :P

i am probably the worst person with money there is.

i pay my billz... but i spend WAY too much money on stupid shit.

i think it's my dad's fault... he always said "money is for spending" and i got that stuck in my head... so that's what i do... i spend money.
