Kid...Your definition?

lately I have been noticing a lot of people considering people "kids" on term of their maturity, not their age.

Websters Online Dictionary wrote:A young person of either sex (between birth and puberty)

So my question is...how do you decide if someone is a "kid", on terms of their maturity or age?

To me kid means a little boy or girl. I have another name for immature people.

If someone calls you a kid like it's an insult, that person is a moron.

Concur. That applies to the word "fa(double-g)ot" as well. There's better words, example:

idiot.

i think both...
for example im 15 but i way more mature and a lot of my freinds...
you could be 20 and be as mature as a 2 year old...i tihnk its both

Age. As Reise said, its not an insult. To call someone immature, a moron, an idiot, or something like the above, would be an insult, not "kid".

I use kid as a term of endearment with anyone younger then me. Guess it's an old-fashioned southern thing, but I still pretty often will say, "How've you been kid?" and other such phrases to anyone who I suspect is even an hour younger then me.

Chalk me down as an "age" person too then I suppose.

That's different. Kid as an insult.

Maturity, definitely. I'm sure there are 12 year-olds out there with more responsibility and maturity than some 20 year-olds in the world. Although I'm not prone to calling people by "kid" or any other term of the like, unless I'm joking or know the person is at least 10 years younger than myself.

Just wondering, do most people think children and kid mean the same thing? Or does that also get defined by age/maturity? Hm, that's a whole other topic in itself.

and, I wouldn't say that about real adults. In the 20s (thus, neo-adults ;) ), it may be true. Otherwise, kids don't have enough life experience to handle things. Much of the time, the adult looks more irresponsable, but the kid doesn't understand the burdens and stresses of real life - the motives.

Anyways, I think people who use "kid" as an insult are idiots.
They obviously say it because they have nothing else to insult you with.
Just because someone is young doesn't make them worse than you.

Im not going to get into an argument about this Neo-Blah....but I have some friends who work 2 job live in section 8 housing (paid for by the gov't) and try to finish there school while they're parents (who are in there 30's) do nothing but get high and pray for food stamps....some ppl would look at them (my friends) and say they're still kids i wouldn't....

Chances are if an adult looks more irresponsible than the child than that adult probably doesn't understand the stresses of real life.....i think we can both agree that growing up is a process that doesn't in your 30's 40's or 50's it continues until you die because you are constantly changing your ideas/perspectives on the burdens of real life because they change as you age......its not uncommon for 80 year olds to refer to 60 year olds as kids

im done im going to bed before you come back with some nonsensical neo-blah blah blah devils advocate crap that'll just piss me off like last time....

Ideas, perspective, and will to suceed in life are not what make you an adult. You haven't argued that your friends parents are not adults, you've argued that they are lazy and unwilling.

Kid to me is someone either immature, irresponsible, inexperienced or disrepespectful, if i call someone a Kid i'm not insulting them, I'm just not going to waste effort being polite or nice to someone who clearly wont give it back.

when it's about age, they are just 'young' a child, or little.

the poll isn't about what makes you an adult its about what you consider to be a kid. I went with Maturity because IMO you are no longer a kid if you have to work to support your family, paying bills, cooking dinner, taking care of the house things like that. These are normally responsibilities associated with being an adult (not a kid), if an "kid" reaches a point in his life where he's 17 18 and knows how to take care of himself as well as his brothers and sisters i think they're mature enough not to be considered kids.

As you pointed out early understanding the "burdens" of RL is something kids can't do. I think having a job and taking care of a family is the main burden of RL and because some ppl who are in there 30's still haven't moved out of there mothers house i would say they do not understand the burdens and stresses of RL. So would you call those kinds of ppl adults or kids. I'd call them kids. Of course as you age your burdens become different from

job/school>job/college>job/apartment>job/family/house>etc

so yes IMO your ideas/perspectives on the burdens of RL change as you age and require a certain amount of maturity to deal with sucessfully....there are plenty of ppl who have made familys they're not ready to take care of and imo those ppl are still kids....

PS: i hate you
