Why do you think Dutch looks like German?

Simple as the title reads..

I don't get it.. 9/10 times I talk to someone who isn't dutch in dutch he says:

"I don't speak German"..

Just a chat I had 2 minutes ago:
Captain Jack Sparrow: ahoy
1211: land in zicht
Captain Jack Sparrow: im not german
Captain Jack Sparrow: me nos peak germanian


He added me to xfire cus of cSro..

Because they're both Germanic languages...just like English.

because deuts sounds like dutch. and the languages are pretty similiar (i know them both)

in german the german language is called deutsch

Dutch is like old german (or the other way round, cant remember). Just like in english we have the new english and old english (where people say thou and thee and crap like that)

I don't speak either and can tell the difference very easily. I find german looks alot more rough, dutch looks more "french".

shortening almost everything.

There was a language before Dutch and German

They're both 'dialects' from the same language called 'Diets'

But they look totally different

Dutch:
"Ik ben TwelveEleven, ik ben 17 jaar oud en een jonge"
German:
"Ich bin TwelveEleven, ich bin 17 jahre alt und ein Jung"

They are from the same language family.
Indo European
and of the sub group
Germanic as well as Proto Germanic from the Proto Indo European
