Windows XP is becoming like a small child!

With automatic updates turned on, I occasionally get a box coming up telling me the system got updated and must restart. Restart now or restart later? The box has about a 60 second timer on it and will restart automatically if you don't click anything.

It's like a kid in the back seat of the car on a road trip.... Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet?

Now if I want to walk away from the computer for a few minutes, I have to save all my documents and close everything just in case it reboots. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

You could stop that dialog from coming up (until you manually restart) by going to start -> run... and typing the following.

net stop wuauserv

and hitting enter. This turns off the Automatic Updates service. Since the service is configured to turn on automatically (assuming you use automatic updates) it will turn back on automatically when you reboot manually.

I should have thought of that before I posted this thread, but the dialog is still a pain if you're not expecting it.

edit: type net start wuauserv if you want to turn it back on.

Edit 2: There's a discussion about this at http://asymptomatic.net/2005/08/11/831/how-to-disable-that-blasted-restart-now-message-from-windows-update

Interestingly enough, there's a group policy setting that will disable that dialog completely. I configured my system just now for this so we'll see how good it works. In the link above, scroll down and take a look at Colin Findlay's post about gpedit.msc

I just keep finding more stuff! When you make a change in Group Policy, it requires a reboot to take effect. However, if you are running XP Pro, you can go to start -> run and type the command

gpupdate.exe /force

and hit enter to force an update to group policy without a reboot. This doesn't work in XP Home however.

I hope to be using Vista by the end of this year with DX10 games like Crysis that will come out. I never tried Vista and I generally don't listen to other people's reviews of it or anything else like video games for that matter.

Everything that doesnt have the "Vistas Certified" logo on it, WONT WORK WITH VISTA.

Homo Vista.

Not true. You can't just make a blanket statement like that. I ran SRO several times in Vista when I had Vista RC1 installed. I'm sure it could still be made to work now that Vista is actually released.

Maybe non-certified software won't work out of the box, but a lot of it could still be made to work. Microsoft would be shutting out a LOT of customers if they made ALL non-vista-certified software not work.

Or Linux, or Solaris, or BSD... Mac isn't the only other viable platform out there. It's also the most expensive alternative.

I really don't mind that XP updates itself. If I had to instal the updates myself... I just wouldn't do it lol.

At least there is the option to disable the nag box but still let auto updates work. Automatic Updates will install the updates then just silently wait until you decide to reboot sometime later. If you don't want to mess with policy (or can't) you can at least stop the service until you reboot. :)

If you go to control panel and click on Security Center, you can manage the settings of your automatic updates. If you don't have the setting on Automatic, then your system shouldn't automatically reboot.

But it's good to have automatic updates on AND not have it force a reboot. You can have both :)
