Cant Watch .avi, help before i break my pc

Im trying to watch an .avi file, it refuses to let me. Wont run, instead gives me the option of Web help, prompting me to this
screen So I am ready to break the computer. I tried a windows update, reinstalled Windows Media Player since it claims to come with all the codecs i need, and I got winamp which just wont run it. I also have a video converter, which says i dont have the right decoder and wont let me change the files.
...Any ideas? please? -.-

download VLC media player, no codec .

Then the avi is damaged or something, VLC media player not running a .avi = hax.

I found an old Samurai Champloo episode which is .avi, runs fine. So i guess its the files. and yes! thats what i got a long time ago and dont have anymore. I hope that works...thanks shousuke. And of course all your VLC lovers.

im a BSPlayer myself, but when in doubt use VLC

you need to get a program calle Gspot, it will tell you what codecs you need to play the file. then you get the codec.
