Indeed a very nice game, loved it.
Used to play it with Hitokeke.

I played it back on l2extreme. fun game.

oh thats right... it doesnt work anymore...

www.fbi.gov wrote:It must have seemed like the perfect scheme—buy the stolen source code of a popular online game, rent some servers to run the game as your own, and then hang a shingle on the web inviting gamers to come play at a steep discount.

A California man who followed that path must have thought he’d never get caught. He was even warned once by the game’s rightful owner, a large South Korean company, to shut down. He didn’t.

“They don’t think that a company is going to come after them at any point,” says Christopher Thompson, a special agent on a cyber squad in the FBI’s office in Austin, Texas. “He said he was going to stop doing it and he didn’t.”

So the company, which has offices in Austin, called the FBI. The suspect was apparently lining his own pockets from “donations” and ads on his site while his pirated version of the game, “Lineage II,” was siphoning $750,000 a month in potential revenues from the company.

According to Agent Thompson, here’s how the scheme evolved:

In 2003, a computer user in China obtained the “Lineage” source code from an unprotected website. The proprietary code was then placed on the underground market, where a Texas man, among others, bought it in 2004. He then passed it along to his business partner in California, who set up a website, http://www.l2extreme.com, to offer the “Lineage” game at a discount. Gamers arrived in droves—as many as 50,000 active users by 2006—which pinched the legitimate game’s bottom line.

“It’s comparable to the music-downloading and file-sharing problem in the late ‘90s—thousands of people engaging in activity that is inherently illegal,” Agent Thompson said.

The California man soon assumed full control of the site and ramped up operations. In late 2005, just months after promising to shut down the site, he rented more powerful servers—enough to accommodate 4,000 simultaneous gamers. He solicited donations from users to help defray the costs and collected more than $25,000 in less than two days.

“Even if game sites collect no money, they still operate in violation of copyright laws,” Agent Thompson said. “But he just got greedy because the money was there.” Indeed, online gaming is estimated to be a $1 billion industry and growing. And massive, multi-player online games (MMOGs in the gamers’ parlance) are one of the leading categories.

Last November, Agent Thompson led a raid on the California man’s home, shut down the game, seized the l2extreme domain, and posted the FBI anti-piracy warning on the site. Meanwhile, the company posted a press release on its website announcing the raid. “We’ve taken this action because we strongly believe in defending the intellectual property rights that we’ve worked so hard to create,” the company said in the release.

The result: several other servers running pirated games “ran for the hills,” Agent Thompson said. There are others, to be sure, but the case serves as a reminder that stealing intellectual property is a criminal offense. As our warning clearly states, “ Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to 5 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000."

twas the best l2 private server out there... RIP l2extreme T_T.

(2 other well known private servers were shut down because of this)

he means you "bumped" up a topic thats a couple of months old.

anyway, i tried L2. really nice game.. lots of private servers to play on.
only thing buggin me a lot is that
1) private servers ARE empty most of the time
2) private servers often have insane xp n drop rates.

for example, i kill 1 mob n go from level 1 to level 18 and have to walk around
the world for 30 minuts just to find the new mobs worthy to kill.

edit: oh, n bump means "bring up my post"

Thanks for that thing of bump AND

thats why I choosed this server, not playing it actually because my computer has some things wrong in them but i played it and it was very popular (at least to be a private server) and now a friend that plays it tell me that it didnt changed respecting to the amount of people + the experience and rate of drop items its very balanced.. ive never played the official lineage II but its like.. i dont know.. normal. Its not a server to try how would you be if you were high level, its a server to play.

I once played on a private server with a great exp rate. Only problem was when I got around 30 I couldn't grind without getting ganked.

well l2extreme back than went down, with couple of other successful servers out there, and one of them was l2-paradise in my eyes it was far best server around , l2extreme mainly was a pvp server with a badass donation items which were ruining normal people game play :p, and of cource SS lag (who knows what is it probably got anoyed by it so much) :)

in fact that both of those servers got the right from the "big company" to open their servers again, and now probably gonna get really far.. lineage2 private servers are succedd more than any other game... u wont ever find a private server with a game t hat holds more than 5k users at once without lag, and with no bugs...

yet l2-extreme is already went live few weeks ago, or even months..

l2-paradise.com is not even open yet as they test a new server which is gonna be bugless and official-like... though the exp rate will be increased to 7x

this is by far best game of all MMORPGS , to anyone who wanna try it, u wont be dissapointed :P

official servers are like shit now though, even private servers are working better than off server cause private has no bots in it.. but on off you will find bunch of "full of bot parties" yeah a single computer holds 8 bots at once and they are just farming there ;)

and to tell you PVP SERVERS suq asses, mostly stupid people nothing to do in there... im myself waiting for l2-paradise to release ive played this server for 2 years and im in love with it, as soon as it will open ill be so happy :)

i can answer basically to all the questions about the game as i was exploring it for a long time and played almost all the races except for ORCS , though i might start this time with it xD

I played on L2-Paradise too if I'm not mistaken. Good server indeed, though I picked a server with a higher exp rate lol. I had fun nonetheless, though, even though it was for a little while.
They took everything down then the FBI arrested a guy who hosted a L2-Private server.

by AnemuS
nope they didnt arrest him lol.. ;) they have arrested an l2-extreme head admin and half developers, if im not mistaken they are jailed for 3 years and payed 250.000$ to lineage2 company xD i remember when i first heard about this i went checking their site, and saw an FBI site.. i was like wtf? xD

anyways l2p closed their server as ken or sct(the head admins) of l2p heard about the issue until it all calms down.. they also said that the server would never go live again, but now its working again :) , they have all of the databases saved, but its probably gonna get wiped , as they want to start a new fresh server as it was before ;)...

whats most shocking thing about this, is the server is still not opened but there is thousands of people signed for beta testing and people vote for a server which is actually not yet living xD and its moving real fast to a 1 place of topsites, as it was before
