But can someone explain to me why do we need a triple digit sentence?

that's the difference between american legal system and canadian legal system. in US life sentence means literally life sentence (you will die before you can get out, therefore the triple digit), whereas in canada life sentence means a long time in jail (possibly 40 years).
then there's china, where life sentence = infinity. they figured what's the point of giving out a # (which generates false hope?) when you are gonna spend the rest of your life in jail.

36 offenses is the answer. The more offenses, the longer it goes.

In Canada we don't have life in prison, rather it's a "perpetual sentence". Besides the fact that in Canada at the current moment there are
less then half a dozen prisoners with life in prison without parole...
The sentences DO NOT STACK, a prisoner who killed 25 people will have the same as someone who has killed 3 but after 20 years a hearing is held to decide whether or not the prisoner is rehabilitated and then is 100% free. But of course, someone who has killed 25 people will have a harder time proving his sanity. This hearing is for ALL PRISONERS, with or without parole...those with parole usually have a hearing after 8-12 years. So basicly, only serial killers and mass murderers will serve life in prison (in Canada). Most, due to overcrowded jails, even with a life sentence, will only serve up to 12 years.
With that said, there are some other thing that make it easier for Canadian criminals. When put into a jail cell prior to the trial, for preventive reasons, if proven guilty the amount of time served is doubled and reduced from the sentence (which does not stack). Personally I find this is stupid since if we put you into preventive lockup it's because you pose a danger to society! letting you out early isn't a great thing... Furthermore, with no prior judicial record, Canadian prisoners server only 1/6th of the time.
So lets do some math. A man RAPES a young boy. He is put into preventive lockup and serves 4 months in prison. He is then sentenced to 3 years in prison. 8 months are automatically removed, leaving 28 months (just over 2 years) which is devided by 6. Our rapist then serves just over 4 and a half months of prison for having RAPED a young boy. Since this sentence is below 2 years minus 1 day, he goes into the provincial system (low to medium security)
Thanks to jurisprudence, there was a case in Quebec where a bus driver inappropriately touched a young student, the boys father beat up the bus driver and ended up serving more time then the bus driver.
Go Go Canada.

Lol that's pretty bad Dom.
Yet when you look at the statistics of american prisoners, you say the same thing with the same sarcasm about that Govt as well.

As has been mentioned, it's about the number of charges and the effect on possibility of parole.
Any sentence of X amount of years is not the same as a life sentence. A life sentence literally means you are in prison until you die or are paroled. Then there's life without the possibility of parole.
In some cases it is far easier to convict someone of multiple charges with sentences of X years than to get them sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. 800 years is an effective way of preventing the possibility of parole for a criminal who is charged with no single crime that carries the possibility of a life without parole sentence.
That's how I understand it, anyway. Not being a student of the law (or a criminal), I could be wrong.

From the article wrote:"He's the poster child for the three strikes law," Fein said.
Looks to me like they're just proving a point.
But 800 fuckin years is a tad on the excessive side.

If you're looking to keep him locked up indefinitely, there's hardly a difference between 800 or 400 or 10,000,000 years.

He can't get parole if he goes undead. Or at least not for about another 700 years.
